Xero announced a major expansion of its JAX agentic AI platform at Xerocon London, introducing features that automate bookkeeping, bank reconciliation, document capture, and cash flow management. The company revealed it now serves five million customers globally. New capabilities include Smart Document Capture for automatic data extraction, Auto Bank Reconciliation in real time, and a document chasing feature to flag missing receipts. JAX will also proactively manage payments by analyzing customer history to tailor collection plans and screening bills for anomalies before payment. Xero is expanding UK tax tools to include corporation tax, launching an enterprise-grade tier called Xero Ultra, and introducing XeroForce, a natural language AI agent builder. Deep integrations with Anthropic’s Claude and Microsoft 365 Copilot embed Xero’s financial intelligence into widely used productivity suites.
Key Elements
Xero (ASX: XRO) is making an aggressive push into agentic artificial intelligence, unveiling a suite of upgrades to its JAX platform designed to automate the most tedious corners of bookkeeping and financial management. The announcements, made at the Xerocon London conference, come as the cloud accounting firm disclosed it now serves five million customers worldwide, a milestone that underscores the scale of its data-driven ambitions.
JAX, Xero’s agentic AI engine, is being positioned as the central nervous system for small business finance. Rather than simply flagging issues for human review, the system is being trained to readse down missing receipts without manual intervention. The goal is to move the platform from a passive digital ledger to an active financial controller
“When Xero moved the ledger to the cloud, we completely reimagined what was possible for small businesses and their advisors. Today, we’re at a similar inflection point as we define the agentic era for small business finance,” said Diya Jolly, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Xero. “Our vision for AI innovation is deeply grounded in Accountable Intelligence—where we automate routine, time-consuming tasks while firmly elevating human judgment.”
Automating the Bookkeeping Grind
The centerpiece of the update is a feature called Smart Document Capture. JAX can now ingestey information directly into the Xero platform. In the coming months, the company plans to extend this capability to bank statements, where JAX will auto-create transactions and check VAT
Perhaps the most immediate time-saver for accountants is the new Auto Bank Reconciliation function. Traditionally one of the most labor-intensive manual tasks in bookkeeping, reconciliation is now handled by JAX, which matches transactions to bank feeds automatically and in real time. Xero says the system will soon handle complex edge cases, such as splitting a single payment across sales and fees.
For practices drowning in paperwork, a “document chasing” feature is on the near-term roadmap. JAX will automatically identify transactions that lack supporting receipts, eliminating the need for staff to sift through digital files to determine what is missing. This is part of a broader evolution of the Xero Partner Hub, which is being reworked to bring live book health, work status, and month-end readiness into a single view connected directly to tax and advisory workflows.
Xero is deepening its UK tax and compliance toolkit. The company currently offers partnership tax, incorporated accounts production, and Making Tax Digital (MTD) for income tax. It now plans to add corporation tax capabilities directly into the platform later this year. Because Xero’s compliance engines run natively on live, transaction-level data, the company argues that the active ledger minimizes errors, speeds up reviews, and maintains traceability from receipt to tax return.
Cash Flow and Payments Intelligence
Cash flow management is emerging as a critical battleground for AI agents. Xero Payments is already helping customers end more months cash flow positive, according to the company, and new JAX features aim to automate even more of the payments lifecycle.
JAX will analyze a customer’s unique payment history and automatically execute tailored collection plans. The system can consolidate multiple invoices, send timed reminders, or pivot to SMS for non-responsive clients, dynamically adapting to payment behavior to accelerate payouts.
On the outgoing side, a feature called Bill Protection will inspect every bill before payment. JAX flags unusual amounts, altered bank details, or unfamiliar suppliers, catching anomalies that might escape manual reviews. Beyond detection, JAX can build preventative cash flow plans, recommending delays to non-essential bills, safeguarding payroll, and helping bridge remaining shortfalls—all within the Xero platform.
Enterprise Features and Workflow Integration
As small businesses scale, they often outgrow their accounting software. Xero is attempting to block that churn with Xero Ultra, a new tier that delivers enterprise-grade financial management and reporting capabilities without the typical cost or implementation burden of traditional ERP systems.
To connect Xero data with the broader software ecosystem, the company introduced XeroForce, a natural language custom AI agent builder. Without writing code, accountants and small business owners can use simple prompts to build agents that link Xero to third-party applications.
Xero also highlighted deep integrations with Anthropic’s Claude and Microsoft 365 Copilot. These partnerships allow customers to securely access and query live Xero financial data directly from their everyday productivity suites, embedding financial intelligence into tools like Excel, Teams, and Outlook. In March, Xero signed a multi-year agreement with Anthropic, and the integration is now being positioned as a key distribution channel for JAX’s intelligence.
Scale and Competitive Positioning
The announcement that Xero now serves five million subscribers globally puts its scale into perspective. The company has spent two decades building its cloud ledger, and the JAX rollout represents a bet that the next wave of value will come not from storing financial data, but from acting on it autonomously.
