PETALING JAYA: In today’s ever-evolving marketing and consumer landscape, it has become essential for brands to stay agile, adapting quickly and strategically to ensure continual relevance.
Even a globally known, culturally- embedded legacy name like McDonald’s cannot rest on its laurels.
“My team and I work incredibly hard just to keep pace with how fast things are shifting,” Chin Mei Lee (pic), chief marketing officer (CMO) of McDonald’s Malaysia, told StarBiz.
But even as approaches and tactics change with the times, Chin believes the fundamental intent of marketing stays the same.
“It always starts with the consumer. What do they need? What problem are we solving for them? What is the role of our brand in their daily lives?”
“Something I always keep in mind and constantly remind young marketers is to not get distracted by the noise or by how trendy a new solution looks. Stay curious, stay focused, and be consistent.”
According to the CMO, relentless discipline and curiosity have been the brand’s core anchor, and this philosophy has driven McDonald’s Malaysia’s most successful, high-impact campaigns.
For example, last year saw the firm introduce the Fans Fries Meal, a combo meal creation centring a much-loved McDonald’s menu staple that has long been overshadowed and relegated as a side offering.
“We asked ourselves: Why should our fries always play the sidekick when they deserve to be the main event?
“That spark gave birth to the Fans Fries Meal – a dream combo featuring an XXL-sized McFries as the hero, paired with a drink and a bonus small McFries,” she said.
Meanwhile, the McChicken #YangKlasik campaign tapped into retro nostalgia, transporting audiences to the 80s with vintage-inspired music, visuals, and decor in homage to the decade when the now-classic McChicken sandwich was first introduced.
As these efforts demonstrate, Chin relishes in the creative challenge of breathing new life into beloved classics.
“When you listen intently to your consumers, the work naturally resonates with them,” she noted.
“The common thread in our top campaigns is that they are all driven by undeniable ‘fan truths’.
“That is why a legendary product like the Spicy Chicken McDeluxe – which has been around for 13 years – still has fresh stories to tell.”.
The brand’s efforts to engage deeply with its customers are also reflected in its investment in technology as it aims to turn each transaction into a meaningful relationship.
“Ultimately, technology at McDonald’s isn’t about the gadgets, but about removing friction from our customers’ daily lives,” Chin said.
The McD App’s Mekdi Superfans loyalty programme, for instance, uses a gamified system that rewards members based on their purchase behaviour, offering a dynamic and personalised experience rather than predictable, flat discounts.
Beyond this, customer convenience is the motivation behind developments such as its Mobile Order and Collect function, Self-Ordering Kiosks, and McDelivery service, which make it easier and quicker for busy consumers to get their meals.
One aspect the brand is particularly adept at is striking the right balance between staying true to the internationally recognised McDonald’s name and DNA while still embracing the local communities and cultures in which it operates.
“The true beauty of our identity is that McDonald’s is a global brand operating like a local brand,” Chin said.
“The mission of ‘making delicious feel-good moments easy for everyone’ is universal.”
Yet, it translates beautifully into every market, allowing us to stay deeply relevant to local consumers right here in Malaysia.
Once again, a deep understanding of the customers it serves is crucial to sustain this balancing act.
“Consumers are incredibly smart and discerning. They know instantly if a brand is being authentic and consistent,” she added.
“McDonald’s is an iconic brand that has stood shoulder to shoulder with Malaysians for the past 44 years.
“We firmly believe that if we stay the course and continue providing the absolute best for our consumers and the communities around us, we will always remain the brand of choice for Malaysians.”
