BluePeak Private Capital has deployed US$12 million from its second fund into Monty Mobile International in a move that underscores the enduring value of basic telecommunications infrastructure. BluePeak Capital is an asset management firm established in 2019, with offices in London, Tunis, Nairobi and Luxembourg.
Announced last week, the investment targets the African hub of Monty Mobile, a provider of application-to-person messaging infrastructure that has become a silent engine for the Africa’s digital economy.
An investment with signalling import
The capital injection is not just a bet on a single company, but is also a strategic wager on the structural realities of African markets that have seen a vast gap between mobile ownership and internet penetration.
According to data from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), 66 per cent of Africans over ten own a mobile phone, but only 38 per cent used the internet in 2024. For banks, fintechs, and e-commerce platforms, the most reliable channel for sending one-time passwords, transaction alerts, and critical notifications is still the humble SMS delivered without an internet connection.
Fulton Shiundu, a partner at BluePeak, explained the investment thesis, describing Monty Mobile as having the capability to combine essential digital infrastructure with a scalable, asset-light business model.
A new phase for BluePeak and Monty
The company operates in 35 African countries through 15 mobile network operator partnerships, giving it access to an addressable market of roughly 66 million consumers across key markets that include Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, and the DRC. The funding will be used to secure new operator agreements, increase messaging volumes, and deepen its continental footprint.
The deal is a landmark first investment for BluePeak Private Capital Fund II, which secured an US$80 million first close in May 2025, backed by a consortium of leading European development finance institutions, including British International Investment, FMO, Swedfund, and the Swiss Investment Fund for Emerging Markets. It was established specifically to address the persistent financing gap facing mid-sized African businesses that struggle to secure growth capital on suitable terms.
Betting on a continent’s digital future
Monty Mobile’s services constitute a crucial enabler for the explosion of digital financial services in Africa. The GSM Association (GSMA) reported that Sub-Saharan Africa was home to over 1.1 billion registered mobile money accounts in 2024, with each interaction generating demand for secure, time-sensitive communications. BluePeak is positioning itself at the intersection of two powerful trends by strengthening this digital backbone. The growth of formal financial inclusion and the increasing digitisation of commerce are the chief beneficiaries.
“Africa is an important growth market for Monty Mobile,” said founder and CEO Mountasser Hachem. According to Hachem, BluePeak’s experience in the region has made it a suitable partner for the company’s expansion. For BluePeak, which has built a portfolio of resilient businesses across pharmaceuticals, logistics, and financial services, the investment is a calculated play on a high-volume, low-cyclicality sector that is essential to the continent’s digital evolution.
