Why Should You Redesign Work Before Restructuring Teams?
This week’s developments show why workforce planning must connect automation, employee capacity, governance, and customer service outcomes. CX organizations need to understand which work disappears, which moves to AI, and which still requires human judgment.
This week’s WFM stories reveal a major restructuring in how organizations plan, allocate, and govern work, raising questions about whether removing management layers eliminates complexity or shifts routine tasks onto already-stretched teams.
Meanwhile, a new AI capabilities announcement promises to model staffing constraints, re-plan resources continuously, and take on more operational execution within defined guardrails.
Another major workplace-AI update suggests these tools are becoming embedded in employees’ everyday workflows, not limited to discrete automation pilots.
For CX leaders, this week’s priority is to look past headcount and technology claims to instead map where work, decisions, and accountability will sit.
Apple’s Plans to Strip Out Management Layers Raise New WFM Questions
Apple’s new CEO has reportedly planned an organizational overhaul designed to make the company faster and leaner by removing layers of middle management.
Oliver Shaw, CEO at Orgvue, explained how organizations that first remove managers without a clear plan can cause unnecessary workflow damages.
“Getting leaner goes beyond removing management layers to removing unnecessary work,” he said.
“When organizations redesign work first, the right structure becomes much clearer. The winners won’t be those that start with the org chart. They’ll be those that start with the work.”
When work performed by those managers disappears along with them, tasks such as coaching, approvals, scheduling, and workforce planning can easily be passed to already-overwhelmed remaining managers and frontline teams, creating hidden workload and new bottlenecks.
To avoid this eventuality, CX leaders should first map the work beneath the affected roles to determine what can be removed or automated and use WFM data to monitor impact through the transition.
Microsoft Relaunches Copilot for More Autonomous Everyday Work
Microsoft has recently unveiled a new Copilot experience to connect existing tools with the next generation of capabilities they’ll need to build, customize, and scale AI across work.
This update combines chat, collaboration, coding, automation, and persistent AI agents, with deeper links to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
As AI moves beyond a standalone productivity tool and into daily employee work, this shift could decrease the time required for administrative tasks but also change workload expectations faster than workforce plans can adapt.
To ensure maximum success, CX leaders using this update should identify which activities AI genuinely removes, and how productivity gains will be measured without raising workloads.
Oracle Introduces Fusion Claw for Governed AI Workforce Planning
Oracle has launched Oracle Fusion Claw, a governed agentic execution runtime for Oracle Fusion Agentic Applications designed to support more complex, longer-running enterprise work,
Mike Sicilia, CEO of Oracle, said the platform could help organisations create measurable business value while retaining human control over objectives and guardrails.
“Every organization is looking at AI and asking the same question: how can we use it to create measurable value for our business?” he said.
“By letting AI take on more of the work, while people set the objectives and guardrails, organizations can unlock tremendous capacity for their teams to focus more on driving growth, innovation, and serving customers.”
After deploying the execution runtime, CX leaders should next focus on the guardrails and whether automated changes improve both employee experience and customer service.
