Spoiler alert in that Elizabeth Holmes was found guilty of committing fraud, and now we’re all talking about her again. Yeah, exactly. I am curious, why do you you guys think this movie has captured the cultural zeitgeist so much when we’re talking about someone who has been convicted of doing something wrong? Like, why off of this preview alone was everyone like, take all my money, I got to go see this before even the buzz started about like, there are no spoilers, you know, why do you think everyone’s so entranced by this Grifter story?
I think it’s the buzz. I think it’s the you’re missing out on this thing. And then by the way, when you go and see it, it is this like amazing, it’s it’s amazing. Like it was so artistic, it was so well done. Um, it was again, it’s like genius. It’s a amazing work of art, but it was the buzz, I think that was a big piece why. Obviously, you have people who have familiarity with the story, with the dropout, with bad blood. But I I actually think a big piece of it, the reason that I was like, oh my gosh, I need to go was seeing everyone talking about it and being like, oh my gosh, I’m going to miss out. I need to see what the the hype is. And then by the way, it actually like living up to the hype and then some. So that was that’s my theory. I don’t know.
Well, it’s interesting about the the the build up and the buzz. I feel like it came out of nowhere. Yeah. Like people weren’t talking about it coming out before the the the trailer actually came out. And so it punched so many people in the face that it like ignited something.
It was day one or day two.
Well, also, I think it’s it’s that inside look to into Elizabeth Holmes, right? We we’ve seen all these stories about her and read about her and she the the few times she spoke publicly, it’s very kind of monotone, this weird, you know, strange affect that she has. And then we see this teaser with with just her and Nathan Fielder and she looks like an I mean, sorry, she looks like an insane person, right? It just looks kind of wild. And and it’s the eyes, the way she’s talking and you’re like, this can’t be a real person. Oh my God, what is she really like? I mean, she’s really just out there. And then obviously this movie, I haven’t seen it yet, I’m going to see it tonight, but it feels like you’re going to get this inside look into someone who might be a sociopath. I don’t know. We’ll see.
I think it’s, I also think about just taking a step back. I mean, it’s the same reason that like true crime documentaries, podcasts are so popular is like, let’s all be honest, like even though like we’re all probably hopefully good people, like people are just fascinated by real world stories, things that actually took place versus fiction in movies, which like you can dramatize them and there might be a good narrative or a story in there, but unless something is real and actually happened, like it just carries a different weight. And so to all of our discussion points here, like I think everybody was just so enamored with this story so many years ago of like different sides of it, like her personality, the people that got swindled, whether like who was right, who was wrong and the fact that she actually then had to go to prison as a result of that. Like I think everybody was just like, wow, like that was a massive, massive story at the time. And so I also think too as a society, we appreciate a little bit of these like throwbacks, you know, whether it be like people wearing cargo pants again, or the fact that this story that we’ve since forgotten about is now back in the limelight. I think that just draws people in.
You you bring up a really interesting point which kind of ties it all back. Um, I’m making numbers up, I don’t know for sure, but this happened like 10 years ago. Mhm. Five years ago, we had the dropout, which was a huge success. And then another five years. And so like, I think the timing for this was sublime. And it just the stars were aligned.
