Shopify (SHOP) shares climbed about 6% Tuesday after the e-commerce company expanded its relationship with Meta (META) to support purchases through Meta’s Muse artificial intelligence assistant.
The arrangementwill allow Muse users to buy products from merchants on Shopify’s platform and complete transactions using Shop Pay, the company’s checkout service. The integration is aimed at enabling AI-powered shopping without requiring customers to leave the assistant’s interface.
Meta introduced Muse earlier this month as an AI agent designed to perform tasks on behalf of users, including product discovery and online purchases. The move adds Shopify to a growing list of companies exploring how AI assistants may handle commerce activities for consumers.
The development comes as Amazon (AMZN) has taken a different approach. Earlier this week, the company restricted Muse from making purchases on its retail marketplace and said outside applications conducting transactions for customers should follow a retailer’s decision on participation.
Amazon has also limited access for other AI shopping tools, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Alphabet’s (GOOG) Gemini and Perplexity’s Comet, as competition around AI-driven commerce continues to evolve.
