Summary:
- OpenAI acquired NextSlide, a startup that converts prompts, notes and documents into editable slide decks.
- Founder Ahmed Beshry previously co-founded Caper AI, which built smart carts and cashier-less checkout technology.
- Beshry said the deal actually closed earlier in the year, and the team will keep building AI creation tools inside OpenAI.
What NextSlide Built
Anyone who has ever scrambled to finish a slide deck before a meeting knows the pain this product targets. <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/08/openai-acquires-presentation-startup-nextslide/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>NextSlide handles that grunt work.
The tool takes typed prompts, notes, files, or research and turns them into a polished, editable presentation. Founder Ahmed Beshry described it as a product “that could turn prompts, notes, documents, or research into a polished, editable presentation.”
The word “editable” is the important part. A slide deck is no good if you cannot tweak it, move things around, and make it look like your own.
NextSlide’s whole pitch was to do the heavy lifting first and leave the final choices to the person using it. Beshry said his mission was “to make visual communication more accessible and help more people express their ideas clearly.”
That is a fancy way of saying he wanted presentations to stop being a barrier. If building a deck used to be a slow, annoying chore, the goal was to make it quick and painless.
A Founder Who Has Already Been Acquired
Beshry is not new to building things that catch a bigger company’s eye. Before NextSlide, he co-founded Caper AI, which made smart carts and cashier-less checkout technology.
Beshry’s path from smart carts and checkout tech to AI presentations might look unrelated at first. Both companies, though, built technology that removes a small, annoying task from someone’s day.

His NextSlide team is now making the same move into a larger home. The plan, he said, is to “continue pursuing that same mission: building AI products that help people create, communicate, and turn their ideas into meaningful work.”
Why OpenAI Wants a Slide Startup
The timeline has an unusual wrinkle. Beshry said on LinkedIn that the announcement was “a few months late” because the deal closed “earlier this year.”
Presentation tools may sound boring next to big AI models, but they solve a common problem. ChatGPT is good at writing text.
Turning that text into a well-designed slide deck is a different job, and NextSlide’s team already knew how to do it. That is likely why OpenAI brought them in instead of starting from scratch.
OpenAI is not just collecting chatbots. This looks like an effort to build an assistant that can take an idea from a rough prompt all the way to a finished file.
What It Means for Your Money
This is a small deal. It will not move a stock index by itself, but it is a useful signal about where the AI industry is heading.
OpenAI could have tried to build a presentation tool on its own. Instead, it bought a small team that already had one.
That is what a company does when it wants to move fast. The deal also shows how competitive the AI talent market is.
Rather than waiting for NextSlide to grow into a rival, OpenAI pulled the team in and put it to work on ChatGPT. For your portfolio, the bigger lesson is about how AI keeps showing up.
The flashiest AI news is usually about chips and giant data centers. But a lot of the real value is landing in ordinary work tools, and the teams that make those tools are becoming takeover targets.
Slide decks are a good example. They are not glamorous, but they are everywhere, and the time people spend on them adds up.
Any product that can shrink that time has real value, whether it stays independent or ends up inside a company like OpenAI. That kind of value tends to show up in company earnings over time.
It also shows up in your daily life. The next time you open a blank presentation, the hard part may already be done before you start worrying about font sizes.
