MTN Nigeria is investing in cable infrastructure in the northern part of the country as part of efforts to strengthen its network and improve customer experience.
Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, chairman of MTN Nigeria and former Executive Vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has disclosed. Ndukwe said the investment forms part of the company’s efforts to address infrastructure needs as demand for reliable telecommunications services continues to grow. He spoke while reflecting on MTN’s 25 years of operations in Nigeria.

The investment
comes as network quality
remains a major concern for telecommunications consumers across the
country. Ndukwe said operators must prioritise ensuring that customers are
satisfied, receive value for money and experience reliable services.
He noted
that achieving a consistently high quality of experience would depend largely
on continued investment in network infrastructure.
“We do not want to make
excuses, so we continue to invest in building a resilient network to manage
these challenges,” Ndukwe said.
According to
him, expanding cable infrastructure is particularly important as Nigerians
increasingly depend on telecommunications for activities ranging from financial
transactions and business to education and entertainment.
The growing reliance
on data has also placed greater demands on network capacity, making
infrastructure expansion critical to sustaining service quality.
MTN’s
investment in the northern region is expected to strengthen connectivity and
support the increasing volume of traffic on its network.
“Recently, we began
investing in additional cable infrastructure, particularly in the northern part
of the country, to provide redundancy for our main fibre capacity.”
Ndukwe had
identified power, security and right-of-way challenges among the major
difficulties facing telecommunications operators in maintaining infrastructure
across Nigeria.
He noted that operators also contend with deliberate fibre cuts
and damage to underground cables during road construction, all of which
increase the cost of keeping networks operational.
These pressures, he said,
divert resources that could otherwise be channelled into further infrastructure
expansion.
He said
overcoming these challenges would be essential to delivering the quality of
experience that consumers increasingly expect from telecommunications
providers.
“The aim is to
improve customer quality of experience so that when a cable is cut, traffic can
be rerouted through another route and services can continue.”
The continued
expansion of cable infrastructure, alongside efforts to address the wider
operating challenges, will therefore remain important as Nigeria’s dependence
on digital connectivity grows.
For MTN, the northern investment represents
another step towards strengthening its network and improving the experience of
customers in the region.
