Filipino online shoppers are evolving. They have become more intentional, more discerning, and more mindful regarding their purchases. This growing intentionality is reshaping Philippine eCommerce; from the way consumers buy electronics and fashion to how they stock up on everyday essentials. This buying behavior is also changing what sellers need to do to win—and keep—their customers.
These shifts are at the heart of Lazada Philippines’ recently concluded “Power Up: Mega Season 2026 Kickoff,” where the online shopping platform gathered together sellers and industry experts to examine the evolving Filipino shopper, the growing importance of trust, and the role of artificial intelligence in eCommerce.

The event also highlighted how sellers can power up their businesses by leveraging Lazada Philippines’ latest innovative tools and AI-powered solutions and gave them an insight into the changing buying habits of Filipinos, all of which they can use to succeed and gain more revenue during the upcoming Mega Season (September to December), also known as “9.9, 10.10, 11.11, and 12.12”. The event further cemented Lazada Philippines’ leadership and expertise in the country’s rapidly evolving eCommerce landscape. The online shopping platform connects Filipino consumers with authentic local and global brands while continuously leveraging AI-powered innovations to make online shopping more personalized, convenient, and trustworthy.

Lazada Philippines’ Category Directors and Janet Basa (General Merchandise) discussed industry trends and consumer behavior in their individual categories. Head of Communications Portia Trinidad, on the other hand, underscored the emerging picture that as Filipino shoppers are becoming more discerning, buying only from reliable and trusted sellers, technology is making the shopping experience increasingly personal and authentic.

The 2026 Mega Sale kick-off opened by sharing the brand’s deep understanding of Filipino consumer behavior, how it influenced Lazada’s technology-driven approach, and its role in shaping the future of eCommerce in the Philippines.
The Filipino consumer is no longer simply looking for a good deal. They have become more deliberate about where they spend their money, particularly as they have access to more information and more choices online. They research products, check ratings and reviews, compare alternatives, and look at the credibility of sellers before making a purchase.
Mishie Dela Cruz, Category Director for Electronics, noted that consumers are increasingly deliberate, particularly when purchasing high-value electronics. Before buying a smartphone, laptop, appliance, or other electronic product, they check specifications, read buyer reviews, consult trusted media, and verify the legitimacy of the seller. Joey Bienvenida, Category Director for Fashion, explained while some purchases may be impulsive, consumers still consider factors such as appearance, sizing, quality, versatility, durability, and value for money, especially since they cannot physically try on clothes or shoes before buying. For sellers, this means that visibility is only the first step; they must also provide the information and experience that give consumers confidence to move from consideration to purchase. FMCG Category Director Raphael Pineda said shoppers prioritize practical value for their everyday needs, with bundles appealing for their convenience and potential savings, while quality and availability remain important. In General Merchandise, Basa noted that functionality is key, as shoppers look for products that serve a purpose and offer practical value.

According to Alvin Michael Ching, Lazada Philippines’ Head of General Operations, the biggest changes the brand is seeing in Filipino consumer behavior today is how they look for value in every purchase, and for sellers, these changes mean really being prepared for the Mega Season. “Value is not only about discounts, but also really having the right items and presenting it to them at the right time. Because shoppers are starting to think about gifting thus, preparation on the sellers’ side must also begin. Having enough stocks will enable them to capitalize on maximizing this strong demand,” he said.

Trust doesn’t end at checkout
As shoppers become more intentional, trust becomes an increasingly important part of the purchase decision. And trust does not necessarily end once the payment has been made. For consumers, after-sales service can provide the assurance and confidence they need to make a purchase. Consumers need to know that should something go wrong, there is a reliable way to address the concern.
“Trust is a big part of the relationship between the platform and the user; trust is being able to have this confidence and peace of mind. This is where returns and refunds come in so that if there is something wrong with the item or if it’s damaged in transit, customers can recover it. That’s something important to us; we make sure that we actually still retain that buyer by turning a negative experience into a good one,” Ching explained.
Lazada Philippines values trust and assures buyers that the brand is not only about making the sale, but a seamless shopping experience is also top of mind. For sellers, therefore, customer relationships extend beyond the transaction. The experience after the sale can be just as important in building confidence and encouraging customers to return.

AI is making online shopping more personal
Technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), is making online shopping more efficient by helping consumers discover and navigate products that are more relevant to their needs. For sellers, AI can help them better understand and reach consumers while creating a more responsive and personalized shopping experience.
Ching noted that Lazada uses AI practically for both shoppers and sellers, from ensuring accurate product descriptions to helping consumers discover relevant products based on their browsing, search history and previous purchases. Lazada Philippines sees AI as an important part of the future of e-commerce, not simply for offering more choices, but for helping consumers find choices that make sense for them.
These changing consumer behaviors will be particularly relevant as the country enters the annual Mega Season. But preparation for this is becoming more strategic as it increasingly requires more than attractive promotions. Sellers need to rethink their marketing priorities, understand category trends and anticipate what shoppers are likely to look for. Beyond promotions and discounts, they should understand what consumers value in each category, prepare their inventory, strengthen their marketing and ensure that the customer experience—from product discovery to after-sales service—lives up to expectations.

“During the shopping season, it all goes back to similar categories because Filipinos love gifting. From September to October, people buy gifts for themselves. 11.11 is when they start planning to give for the Christmas season, and 12.12 is last minute shopping. For the Electronic category, you have the devices and gaming consoles. For Fashion, it’s usually the branded items. For FMCG, it’s groceries because we like to give food items, and items for Noche Buena. For General Merchandise, it’s Christmas lights and décors. Tools and home improvement items are also strong, as people also love to gift or purchase items that help organize homes,” Ching smiled. The bigger lesson, however, extends beyond the Mega Season calendar. Success in eCommerce increasingly depends on how well businesses understand the people behind the clicks.
The evolution of the Filipino shopper points to an eCommerce marketplace that is not simply more digital, but more thoughtful, as consumers research more, weigh their options carefully and place greater value on authenticity, relevance, functionality, quality and trust. While they may take longer to purchase, they are more likely to return when they find products that meet their needs and earn their confidence. For Lazada Philippines, this means using technology to make shopping more personal, convenient and trustworthy, while giving sellers an opportunity to meet consumers where they are in their decision-making journey. Ultimately, the future of eCommerce will be shaped not by technology or promotions alone, but by how well businesses understand Filipino shoppers and earn their confidence, one purchase at a time.
