Muscatine Power and Water Data Breach Class Action Settlement
Individuals who received notice their data was compromised in the Muscatine Power and Water breach, may qualify to claim up to $5,000 from a settlement.

Muscatine Power and Water has agreed to pay $525,000 to settle a class action lawsuit alleging a targeted cyberattack exposed sensitive customer data. Compromised information included names, mailing addresses, driver’s license information, bank routing/bank account number and social security numbers.
Who can file a claim for a data breach payout?
Class members are all individuals identified by Muscatine Power and Water as impacted by the January 2024 data breach, including those who were sent notice of the incident.
How much are settlement payments?
Class members have the following benefit options:
- Out-of-pocket expenses: Class members can claim up to $500 for documented out-of-pocket expenses that occurred between Jan. 26, 2024, and Oct. 26, 2026 and are traceable to the data breach. Eligible expenses include fees for credit reports, credit monitoring, or freezing/unfreezing credit, cost to replace IDs and postage for contacting financial institutions.
- Documented extraordinary loss payment: Class members can claim up to $5,000 for losses due to identity theft or fraud that occurred between Jan. 26, 2024, and Oct. 26, 2026, and were likely caused by the data breach and not already covered by out-of-pocket expenses. Claimants must show the loss was probably caused by the data breach and demonstrate they attempted to prevent the loss or recover the funds, for example, by using insurance.
- Attested time spent: Class members can claim up to five hours, at $20 per hour, for time spent responding to the data breach, a maximum of $100, This includes changing passwords, investigating suspicious account activity and researching the data breach.

To receive a settlement payment, class members can file a claim online, or print and complete the PDF claim form and mail or email it to the settlement administrator.

Required proof and claim information
- To submit a claim online, class members must provide the login ID and PIN from the settlement notice they received.
- Out-of-pocket expenses claims require supporting documentation, which may include receipts, bank statements, or other proof showing expenses incurred due to the data breach.
- Extraordinary losses claims require supporting documentation such as police reports, correspondence with financial institutions, insurance claims and other proof of identity theft or fraud.

When is the Muscatine Power and Water data breac settlement payout date?

Why is there a class action settlement?
The class action lawsuit was filed after a targeted cyberattack on Muscatine Power and Water’s computer systems in January 2024. Certain files containing private information, including names and Social Security numbers, were accessed.
The plaintiff alleged that the company failed to adequately protect customer data. Muscatine Power and Water denies the allegations, however agreed to settle to avoid the expense and risk of further litigation litigation.
