The market punished eGain hard, with the stock sliding almost 18% in a single session. Yet the headline story is more about margin compression than a business in free fall. Q4 revenue landed at about US$22.2 million while basic earnings per share came in at roughly US$0.05, capping a fiscal year where net profit margin for the trailing period fell to 9.7% from 36.5% a year earlier.
For a software and artificial intelligence focused customer experience company, that swing in profitability is what is driving the sentiment reckoning far more than the modest top line.
Love eGain’s customer experience focus but concerned about that sharp pullback in net margin? Consider benchmarking it against list of solid balance sheet and fundamentals stocks (52 results).

eGain bull case hinges on AI customers, not legacy drag
Bulls argue eGain is quietly becoming an AI Knowledge SaaS compounder, where AI customer ARR and deal quality matter more than short term revenue pressure. The latest results give this view some support but also set a higher bar. AI customer revenue grew 20% for FY26 and 11% in Q4 and now represents 72% of SaaS ARR. Dollar based net retention of 104% for AI customers shows existing AI users are still expanding. Record operating cash flow of US$21.2 million and non GAAP SaaS gross margin around 78% show the model can produce cash even while shifting mix. However, total RPO fell 5% and short term RPO dipped 2%. Guidance for FY27 AI customer revenue growth of 8% to 10% and low single digit adjusted EBITDA margin points to a measured, not breakaway, trajectory.
Bear case focuses on margin squeeze and revenue reset
Bears argue that eGain faces structural pressure from larger platform competitors, legacy runoff and customer churn that could cap scale and compress margins. The FY26 numbers give this concern real weight. Net profit margin for the trailing period fell to 9.7% from 36.5%. Q4 revenue of about US$22.2 million was down from US$23.23 million a year earlier, and AI customer net retention cooled to 104% from 120% as last year’s large bank expansion rolled out of the compare. Total RPO declined to US$87 million, down 5%, which weakens forward revenue visibility. Management is guiding FY27 revenue down to US$84.5 million to US$86.0 million and to a GAAP net loss of US$2 million to US$3 million. The stock’s 17.9% one day fall suggests investors are treating this reset as more than a small bump.
Compare eGain’s AI ARR momentum and record US$21.2 million operating cash flow with the recent 17.9% share price fall to see whether analysts think the reset has gone too far or not. See the consensus price target analysis for eGain

You can copy Bill Ackman and buy Netflix. Knowing why you did is the hard part.
Netflix case is interesting. The scariest competitor is the one that does not need to make money. Amazon can run video at a loss forever because it is really a Prime retention tool with a content budget attached. On the other hand there is Youtube.
Pershing Square hasn’t beaten the S&P over the last five years, though the long-run record is genuinely good. I like Ackman as a person. I enjoy listening to Ackman and that’s about where it ends for me.
