AI research company Anthropic has become SpaceX’s largest customer, accounting for more than 34.5% of the company’s revenue in the third quarter of 2026. Previously, the US government had been the primary customer of Elon Musk’s aerospace business.
In SpaceX’s financial filings, its largest customer was initially identified as “Customer B,” which purchases computing capacity from the Super Intelligence division. Bloomberg identified that customer as Anthropic.
The company, which could become the first AI developer to go public, rents data center capacity in Memphis from SpaceX and plans to spend up to $120.5 billion on it through 2029 payments could reach $3.1 billion per month. However, the total amount is not guaranteed: Anthropic has the right to terminate the agreement in early 2027 by giving its partner 90 days’ notice
Recent financial results indicate SpaceX’s rapid growth. In the third quarter, the company’s revenue increased by 161%, while its artificial intelligence division became profitable for the first time. In addition to Anthropic, Musk’s company rents computing capacity to Google, which pays approximately $920 million per month.
“The reliance on AI computing contracts for revenue shows how much SpaceX has changed in less than a year, ever since the rocket firm bought Musk’s AI venture xAI,” writes Bloomberg. “For much of SpaceX’s history, its contracts with NASA and the Department of Defense were its most lucrative.”
In the third quarter, SpaceX had only two customers that each accounted for more than 10% of its total revenue. The other, described by Bloomberg as a “collection of government agencies,” contributed another 16.6%.
Musk himself previously predicted that NASA, once one of SpaceX’s largest partners, would account for less than 5% of the company’s revenue in 2026.
