NZ Wheels: driving excellence for over three decades
KUALA LUMPUR:
In the world of luxury automobiles, a successful dealership is about more than selling prestigious cars. It is also about building lasting relationships with customers, providing exceptional service and constantly evolving to meet their changing expectations.
For NZ Wheels Sdn Bhd, these principles have been at the heart of its business since its establishment in 1994. What began as a single dealership in Klang has since expanded into one of the brand’s largest dealer groups in Malaysia.
According to Naza Automotive Group CEO Rizal Jailan, the company’s founding vision was to provide local Mercedes-Benz owners with the same level of service and care they would expect anywhere else in the world.
“That vision hasn’t really changed. We wanted to be the dealer a Mercedes-Benz customer trusts for the whole life of the car, from the day they collect it to the day they come in for the next one,” he told FMT Lifestyle.
A subsidiary of the Naza Group, NZ Wheels is an authorised Mercedes-Benz dealer in Malaysia, specialising in the sale and after-sales servicing of luxury vehicles. Its services include new vehicle sales, maintenance, repairs, genuine parts and customer support.
NZ Wheels entered the market at a time when luxury car ownership was still relatively exclusive in Malaysia. Rizal recalled that owning a Mercedes-Benz in the mid-1990s was considered a significant milestone.
However, as the premium automotive market expanded, so did the need for reliable after-sales services.
“Customers were buying premium cars; they needed genuine parts, trained technicians and a consistent customer experience. This is what we focused on, and it gave us a loyal customer base, allowing us to grow further,” he explained.
The company’s early years were not without challenges. Apart from establishing its reputation, NZ Wheels had to navigate the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis, which severely affected Malaysia’s automotive industry.
Nevertheless, its emphasis on customer relationships and staff development helped lay the foundations for future growth. Over the following decades, NZ Wheels expanded beyond Klang, establishing operations in Johor Bahru, Bangsar and Setapak.
A significant milestone was the opening of its Johor Bahru Autohaus in December 2017, bringing Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach together under one roof, alongside a MANUFAKTUR personalisation space.
Today, its Klang outlet operates as a full 3S Autohaus with a certified body and paint centre, while Johor Bahru houses a 3S facility and AMG Performance Centre.
“Our greatest achievement is our people and the trust our customers place in them,” Rizal said. “Buildings can be upgraded, but a customer who has serviced with us for years, and now brings their children’s cars to us, is something you earn over time.”
One of NZ Wheels’s proudest achievements came with the transformation of its Bangsar Autohaus into Stars@Mercedes-Benz Bangsar, following a RM5 million investment last year.
The exclusive retail concept, which offers customers a more personalised luxury automotive experience, marked another significant milestone in the company’s journey.
“Being chosen as the first dealer in the world to bring that concept to life says a great deal about the confidence Mercedes-Benz has in NZ Wheels,” Rizal said.
The facility incorporates interactive digital displays, a digital vehicle handover area, and electric vehicle charging facilities, reflecting the changing expectations of today’s luxury car buyers.
Rizal noted that digitalisation has fundamentally changed the automotive retail experience, with customers increasingly researching and configuring vehicles online before stepping into a showroom.
NZ Wheels has responded by introducing services such as online maintenance bookings, digital service updates and vehicle pick-up and drop-off arrangements.
The company is also preparing for the growing adoption of electric vehicles, investing in charging infrastructure and ensuring its technicians receive Mercedes-Benz certification to work safely on high-voltage systems.
Its latest expansion is a new 2S centre in KL North East, scheduled to open on Nov 11, offering greater servicing capacity and upgraded facilities.
For Rizal, these investments reflect NZ Wheels’s commitment to remaining relevant in an increasingly competitive industry.
The company remains committed to upgrading its facilities to the latest Mercedes-Benz standards every few years.
Looking ahead, he believes a combination of technological innovation and meaningful personal relationships will define the future of luxury automotive retail.
Rizal hopes NZ Wheels will continue building on its three-decade legacy, setting new benchmarks for customer service, technical expertise and innovation in Malaysia’s luxury automotive industry.
