Yeo Seo-jeong, South Korea’s top female gymnast who competes for Jecheon City Hall, has been named most valuable player of the 107th National Sports Festival.
Yeo received 30 of 56 votes, or 53.7%, in a media poll announced by the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee on Oct. 22. She is the first gymnast in 14 years to win the festival’s MVP award, following Sung Ji-hye in 2012. Including Kim Kyung-hoon, who won in 1986, Yeo is only the third artistic gymnast to receive the honor. She will receive 5 million won and a trophy.
Yeo claimed six medals in artistic gymnastics, which was held before the festival’s opening ceremony, winning four golds, one silver and one bronze. On Oct. 7, she took the women’s senior individual all-around title with 52.966 points and added a silver in the team all-around. Two days later, she swept the apparatus finals, winning gold in her signature event, the vault, with 14.083 points, as well as the balance beam with 13.233 and the floor exercise with 13.000. She also took bronze on the uneven bars that day.
Swimming star Hwang Sun-woo, who represents Gangwon Province, fell short in his bid to match the record of five MVP awards. He won four gold medals at the festival, along with another gold in a demonstration event. Kim Seo-yeong of North Gyeongsang Province, who entered the competition with a record 47 career gold medals among this year’s participants, also won four golds and one silver but lost out to Yeo in the MVP vote.
The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee has awarded an MVP honor at the National Sports Festival since the 61st edition in 1980. Retired swimmer Park Tae-hwan, nicknamed “Marine Boy,” holds the record with five MVP awards.
