Why Trader Joe’s doesn’t deliver, or offer curb pickup
While the majority of retailers, from supermarkets to department stores, offer several ways of getting items delivered one grocery chain is a standout for not providing customers any delivery option. Or even an online storefront for that matter.
Trader Joe’s, which has over 600 stores across 43 states, also doesn’t offer curbside pickup and can’t be found on any third-party delivery app including Instacart.
The reason? The brand is all about the in-store experience, according to an Inc. report.
Instead, Trader Joe’s depends on the in-store experience more than other retailers a Cal Ply San Luis Obispo associate professor
“The décor, the color scheme, the store layout, the abundant store associates on the floor, the ringing of the bells, the free samples, and the sense of discovery as shoppers roam the aisles and find new products are all central to Trader Joe’s brand, image, and success,” he told Inc.
An e-commerce grocery experience doesn’t offer any of those aspects.
One industry watcher describes Trader Joe’s as the “odd man” out given its lack of online grocery option. Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, said Trader Joe’s said the lack of delivery and online store isn’t hurting the brand given it’s store experience is distinctive, according to the news outlet.
