What will businesses look like in the next five or ten years?
Artificial intelligence is changing how decisions are made, e-commerce is reshaping how consumers buy, while data, cybersecurity and digital platforms are transforming how organisations operate.
For students completing a pre-university qualification today, the question is no longer simply, “Do I want to study business or technology?” Increasingly, the answer can be both.
Recognising this shift, Sunway University’s School of Global Futures & Sustainable Innovation (formerly known as the School of American Education) is introducing the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Digital Business, a technology-focused business degree designed for the digital economy, delivered in collaboration with Sunway Business School.
The programme combines a strong foundation in business with applied knowledge in technology, data, innovation and digital platforms, preparing students to understand not only how technology works, but how businesses can use it to create value.
“Digital transformation is no longer limited to technology companies. Every industry is being reshaped by AI, data and digital platforms. We want to develop graduates who can bridge the gap between business and technology and apply digital capabilities to real business challenges,” says Assoc. Prof. Dr Woo Pei Jun, Dean of the School of Global Futures & Sustainable Innovation, Sunway University.
More Than Digital Marketing
The word “digital” is often associated with social media or online advertising. Digital Business, however, goes much further.
It examines how technology transforms the entire organisation, from customer experience and decision-making to operations, supply chains, business processes, data and new revenue opportunities.
Students study core business areas such as management, economics, marketing, finance and strategy alongside contemporary subjects including Artificial Intelligence, E-commerce and Cybersecurity, Digital Marketing, Business Intelligence, Business Data Visualization, Innovation Management and Technology Entrepreneurship.
“Digital business sits at the intersection of business strategy, technology, and innovation. By bringing together the expertise of faculty from Sunway Business School and the School of Global Futures & Sustainable Innovation, we are able to provide students with a broader and more integrated understanding of how digital capabilities create business value. This collaboration reflects the way organisations operate today, where business and technology are increasingly inseparable,” added Prof. Lim Weng Marc, Dean of Sunway Business School, Sunway University.
In other words, students do not learn technology in isolation. They learn how businesses can apply technology to solve problems, improve performance, identify opportunities and drive innovation.
Building Skills for the Digital Economy
The four-year programme progressively develops students’ business and digital capabilities.
Students begin with foundations in business, technology, communication and quantitative skills, including AI Foundation and Applications, before progressing into technology ventures, innovation, statistics and organisational behaviour.
They then explore areas such as e-commerce, cybersecurity, digital marketing, business intelligence and data visualisation, before advancing into business process management, supply chain management, innovation management and technology entrepreneurship.
A Business Practicum option in Year 4 also provides an opportunity to connect classroom learning with workplace experience.
“Technology will continue to evolve, but the ability to understand business needs, interpret information and identify meaningful solutions will remain essential,” says Dr Woo. “Our focus is therefore on developing graduates who can combine business judgement with digital capability and adapt as the workplace changes.”
An American Education Experience with a Global Dimension
The programme is offered under Sunway University’s School of Global Futures & Sustainable Innovation and developed in collaboration with the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University.
Students also have the option to complete additional credits to obtain an Arizona State University degree certificate, providing an opportunity to broaden their international academic experience.
Where Can Digital Business Take You?
Digital Business opens doors to diverse career pathways, including Business Intelligence Executive, Digital Business Analyst, Market Intelligence Analyst, digital transformation, business process analysis, digital marketing, e-commerce, business development, innovation and entrepreneurship.
These opportunities extend beyond technology companies. As organisations across banking, retail, consulting, manufacturing, logistics, healthcare and other sectors continue to digitalise, professionals who understand both business and technology will be increasingly valuable.
For students who are interested in technology but do not necessarily want a coding-intensive degree, Digital Business offers another route — at the intersection of business, technology, analytics and innovation.
