OpenAI has announced that it is imposing stricter limits on the weapons-related information ChatGPT provides to teenage users, even when questions appear harmless. The changes form part of broader new safeguards designed to help prevent real-world violence. The company will restrict practical details about weapons and security systems that could be misused. These limits apply to users it predicts are under 18, regardless of whether the conversation shows any sign of violent intent.Existing rules already barred helping teens find or obtain weapons or assisting anyone in planning violence; the update extends those protections further. The move comes amid growing scrutiny of AI chatbots’ risks to young users and the industry’s responsibility in detecting potential threats of harm. OpenAI said that the new safeguards will begin rolling out in the coming weeks and will continue to be refined. Additional measures apply more broadly. For all users, ChatGPT will provide less detailed information about past mass attacks, including the weapons and equipment involved and how they were obtained. The chatbot will also be able to automatically end conversations in which a user appears fixated on violence, and the company may temporarily pause accounts after repeated such incidents. OpenAI has strengthened its age-prediction system to place estimated under-18 users into its dedicated teen experience and plans to notify parents if a teen’s account is paused for repeatedly discussing violence. The announcement accompanied a new Community Safety Report on the company’s violence-prevention efforts. OpenAI noted that it made more than 200 referrals to law enforcement in the third quarter of 2026 related to potential threats of violence. Teens will still be able to use ChatGPT for help preventing or de-escalating violence, seeking support, or connecting with a trusted adult.
What ChatGPT’s change in policy means for kids
Here’s what OpenAI’s ‘Community safety report and new protections for teens’ say:”ChatGPT for Teens applies age-appropriate safeguards for users under 18, with stronger protections and additional limits to reduce exposure to sensitive content. We’re now placing further limits on weapons-related information teens can receive, even when a question appears harmless. Our policies already prohibit helping anyone plan or carry out violence and restrict helping teens find or obtain weapons. We’re extending those protections to restrict practical information about weapons and security systems that could be misused to facilitate violence, even when there’s no sign of violent intent. Teens can still use ChatGPT to help prevent and de-escalate violence, seek support, and connect with a trusted adult.Poll

We launched age prediction last year, which analyzes multiple signals such as behavior patterns to estimate whether a user may be under or over 18. We strengthened our age prediction system to continually assess new signals as people use ChatGPT and move teens into the under 18 experience when appropriate. Users who are incorrectly placed in the under 18 experience will always have a fast, privacy-protective way to confirm they are adults and have additional teen protections removed through Persona, our age verification partner. Our parental controls let parents link their ChatGPT accounts to their teens and manage safety settings together. Linked accounts include safety alerts that may be sent when specially trained reviewers identify a serious self-harm concern and behaviors that may be associated with disordered eating. In July, we expanded those alerts to notify parents if their teen’s account has been deactivated for violating our usage policies on violence. We are working to introduce notifications for parents if we pause their teen’s account for repeatedly discussing violence, as detailed above.”
