Almost 4 million people are in line for an AT&T data breach payout, and a judge’s order finally gives a clearer picture of when the money will be released. But the same order contains a warning. Around 800,000 claims have already been rejected as fraudulent, and some genuine claimants may need to act quickly to keep theirs.
The $177 million settlement covers two AT&T data breaches disclosed in 2024, and the presiding judge, Sidney Fitzwater, granted it final approval on October 2nd.
Claims closed on December 18th, 2025, so if you didn’t file by then, you can’t claim now. If you did, there’s a timeline for when the payment might arrive. But don’t expect to get rich overnight, most recipients will get enough for a takeout.
And, of course, scammers will likely show up as payments start to land.

The Breaches Behind The AT&T Data Breach Payout
The first breach goes back years. According to the claimants’ complaint, a hacker got into AT&T’s systems in 2019 and took <a href="https://bitcomme.com/jos-a-bank-puts-customer-experience-at-the-center-of-new-store-concept/” title=”Jos. A. Bank puts customer experience at the center of new store concept”>customer data that, depending on the person, included social security numbers, dates of birth, account numbers and passcodes. ReadForbes‘ story on it here.
That data turned up on the dark web by August 2021, but AT&T didn’t announce the breach until March 30th, 2024, almost three years later.
The second came on July 12th, 2024, when AT&T revealed that call log data had been downloaded from its workspace on the Snowflake cloud platform. It included customers’ phone numbers, the numbers they’d been in contact with, how often and for how long, and for a small number of people, cell site location data. It didn’t include the content of texts, names or social security numbers.
Numerous lawsuits followed across the country and were combined into a single case in federal court in Dallas. AT&T agreed to settle in May 2025 for $177 million, with $149 million covering the first breach and $28 million covering the second. The deal was signed off two months later.
When Will The AT&T Data Breach Payout Arrive?
There’s no payment date yet. According to the court’s order, payments will go out electronically or by paper check within 60 days of the settlement’s “Effective Date,” but the order doesn’t say when that date will be.
The biggest risk to the timeline is an appeal. The order says “approximately 45 objectors” challenged the settlement, and the judge overruled almost all of their arguments. But he also noted that at least one objection “may be raised on appeal.” If any objector takes the case to a higher court, payments could be held up for months.
