(CLO) Increasing numbers of workers in the UK are only doing the tasks assigned to them, unwilling to take on additional responsibilities or work overtime. This trend could cause the country’s labor productivity to continue to grow slowly.
“Quiet quitting” refers to the trend of employees completing only assigned tasks, without proactively taking on additional responsibilities or working overtime. This concept became popular on social media after the Covid-19 pandemic, as many people reacted to heavy workloads, inadequate pay , and rising living costs.
Instead of taking on extra tasks, working overtime, or constantly checking emails after work, those following this trend focus on completing their assigned work and dedicating more time to their personal lives.
However, according to the Resolution Foundation, this is not simply a social media trend. A report from the UK’s Institute for Economic and Social Policy Research shows that workers have become less engaged with their jobs and less willing to put in effort for their companies over the past decade.
A survey of 4,656 adults revealed that the percentage of people willing to go the extra mile to support their employers decreased from 69% in 2015 to 55% in 2025. Meanwhile, the percentage of people who were not genuinely satisfied with their job roles dropped to around 25%, the lowest level on record.
Job satisfaction levels have also declined. Only 63% of those surveyed found their jobs interesting, significantly lower than the 74% reported a decade ago.
“Workers today are less attached to their employers and generally less motivated than they were a decade ago,” the report noted .
The Resolution Foundation suggests that declining employee engagement may be one of the reasons for the weak growth in UK labor productivity. Productivity, which had already slowed after the global financial crisis, has continued to weaken since the pandemic began.
Hannah Slaughter, chief economist at the Resolution Foundation, noted that this situation not only disadvantages workers but also impacts productivity and the labor supply. These are all crucial factors for improving living standards in the coming years.
The report also indicated that salary is becoming an increasingly important factor in workers’ job choices. This is not surprising given that the cost of living in the UK has remained relatively stagnant for the past decade.
Sir John Curtice, professor of politics and co-editor of the report, noted that these results do not mean that young people are becoming lazy or that workers in general are reluctant to change jobs.
Instead, workers are increasingly valuing jobs that offer good income and flexible working hours. According to him, to truly retain employees, businesses need to pay more attention to both salary and working conditions.
This places demands on employers to improve salary policies, work environments, and work-life balance. According to researchers, to increase employee engagement, businesses cannot simply expect employees to voluntarily work more; they need to create attractive working conditions to encourage long-term commitment.
