The cybersecurity capabilities of AIare a double-edged sword: on one hand, they are helpingto identify and correct existing gaps in the code of systems of major companies in the industry, in many cases unknown to human teams, in addition to strengthening detection, blocking, and mitigation measures against attacks.

On the other hand, those same capabilities are used to automate, perfect, and accelerate attacks, and with the leap to agentic AI, it is the AI itself that puts systems at risk with autonomous actions already seen in the case of OpenAI and Hugging Face.

Reducing the risk

In the face of the threat posed to society by AI-driven attacks, more than a hundred companies, including OpenAI, IBM, Google, CrowdStrike, Cloudflare, Xbox, AWS, Cisco, Dell, NTT DATA, and Check Point, have called, reports EP, on “all organizations, cybersecurity companies, technology partners, Governments, and leading AI companies” to limit the risk now that there is still time.

The purpose is to seek a collective response that makes it possible to“accelerate defenders’ priorities with tools, funding, and practical support, especially for critical infrastructure organizations with limited budgets.”

The signing companies argue that it is “essential”to recognize that security as understood until now has become obsolete, and that systems, especially critical ones, cannot afford“persistent errors, excessive permissions, misconfigurations, insecure and unpatched software, weak authentication, and technical debt in legacy systems.”

They also consider that the role of AI in defense is key, as this technology “makes essential security tasks faster, cheaper, and more effective,” although they emphasize the need to share “tools, practical knowledge, and verified solutions” so that many more organizations can benefit from the protection.

New alliances

Since “cyber capabilities are advancing globally,” a “global response” is required, with new alliances that contribute to “raising security standards and finding new solutions to emerging cyber threats.”

“Let us correct the most dangerous vulnerabilities, verify the solutions, and share those that work so others can leverage them. Together, we can turn current AI advances into lasting improvements in security that benefit everyone,” they stress in the open letter.
