CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Online shopping services for Stop & Shop remain unavailable following a cybersecurity incident involving its parent company, Ahold Delhaize.
Stop & Shop, Hannaford online services disrupted after cybersecurity incident
The company confirmed on Monday that it was dealing with a security issue within its network and took some systems offline as a precaution. The cause of the incident has not been disclosed. The grocery chain says there is no evidence that customer data has been affected.
While stores, pharmacies, and gas stations remain open, customers attempting to place orders through the company’s website or mobile app have encountered maintenance messages.
Cybersecurity expert explains potential cause
Jeff Trask, founder of Trask Resilience, told 22News the disruption could be the result of a denial-of-service attack, in which an attacker floods a website with traffic and prevents legitimate users from accessing it.
“They’ll write programs and they’ll write scripts that will basically bombard the website with a ton of traffic, which basically doesn’t allow the bandwidth for customers to access the site,” Trask said.
If that is the cause, Trask said the company would work to block malicious traffic and determine how to rebuild affected systems. He said companies may also need to restore systems from a previous point before reconstructing lost data.
“They’re going to look back whether that’s hours, days, you know, weeks and they’re going to try to restore from that point. Once they restore from that point, they’ll be able to then reconstruct all of the lost data,” Trask said.
Company apologizes, offers customer discount
In a statement sent to 22News on Friday, Stop & Shop President Roger Wheeler apologized for the ongoing outage and said teams are working around the clock to restore service.
“We are truly sorry for the inconvenience caused by this temporary outage of Stop & Shop’s app and website,” Wheeler said. “I want to assure everyone that our stores, pharmacies, and fuel stations are open to serve you – and that our team is working around the clock to resolve this as quickly as possible.”
Wheeler said there is currently “no evidence that any customer data has been impacted.”
As a gesture of appreciation for customers’ patience, Stop & Shop is offering shoppers 10% off their next in-store purchase, up to $10, through Thursday, October 22. Customers can receive the discount by checking in at a Savings Station inside their local store.
What customers should know
As a precaution, Trask recommends customers monitor bank statements and credit reports for any suspicious activity.
“If you see something that is unusual, unauthorized, then call your bank immediately,” he said.
As of Friday, a notice posted on Stop & Shop’s website stated that the company’s website and app remain unavailable while crews work to restore service. Customers can continue placing grocery orders through DoorDash, Instacart, and Uber Eats.
The company thanked customers for their patience and said it is working to get online services back up and running as quickly as possible.
