Jason Liberty and Varun Krishna
Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) has appointed Royal Caribbean Group Chairman and CEO Jason Liberty and Rocket Companies CEO Varun Krishna to its Board of Directors, adding travel, financial and technology expertise as the carrier executes its strategic priorities and reshapes its customer experience.
The appointments are effective immediately. Southwest said the additions strengthen the board with public-company leadership experience spanning technology, digital innovation, commercial strategy and finance.
The selections are notable for the different perspectives Liberty and Krishna bring to the airline. Liberty has spent more than two decades at Royal Caribbean, giving him extensive experience in travel, operations and financial management. Krishna has built his career around digital products, financial technology and consumer platforms, areas that are becoming increasingly important as airlines compete on the experience surrounding the flight as well as the flight itself.
“Jason and Varun are exceptional leaders who bring complementary experience leading complex, customer-focused companies through periods of growth, innovation, and transformation,” Southwest independent Board Chair Doug Brooks said. “Their perspectives will be valuable as Southwest continues to advance its strategic plan and deliver long-term value for our Shareholders.”
Liberty has served as Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group since 2025 after becoming CEO in 2022. He previously spent nine years as the cruise company’s Chief Financial Officer.
Across more than 20 years at Royal Caribbean, Liberty has held senior responsibilities covering finance, strategy, technology, legal, shared services and business operations. He also serves as Chair of Cruise Lines International Association, the global cruise industry’s leading trade organization.
That background gives Southwest a director with experience managing another large travel business where pricing, capacity, customer loyalty, digital engagement and operational execution are closely connected. Royal Caribbean’s business also provides Liberty with perspective on discretionary travel demand and competition for consumer spending across the broader leisure market.
“Southwest is one of the most respected and recognizable brands in travel, with a strong culture, a proud history, and exciting opportunities ahead,” Liberty said. He added that he looks forward to supporting the company as it evolves its customer experience and positions itself for long-term growth.
Krishna, meanwhile, brings experience from financial technology and some of the technology industry’s largest consumer platforms. As CEO of Rocket Companies, he leads a fintech platform that includes Rocket Mortgage, Redfin and other consumer finance businesses and oversees the strategy for integrating its brands and products.
Before joining Rocket, Krishna held senior executive roles at Intuit, where he oversaw the company’s end-to-end portfolio of consumer and tax products and services. Earlier in his career, he held leadership positions at PayPal, Groupon and Microsoft.
His appointment gives Southwest additional board-level expertise in digital products and the integration of technology across large consumer businesses. Those capabilities have become strategically important for airlines as customers increasingly expect digital experiences spanning shopping, booking, payments, trip management and loyalty.
“Southwest has a remarkable legacy of democratizing travel and building deep loyalty with Customers and Employees,” Krishna said. “As a loyal customer, I’m honored to join the Board and contribute as Southwest continues innovating to serve Customers and build on its successes.”
Southwest President, CEO and Board Vice Chairman Bob Jordan said Liberty’s travel, operational and financial leadership complements Krishna’s experience in digital products, innovation and customer engagement.
“Together, their perspectives will strengthen our Board as we continue enhancing the Customer experience, improving performance, and executing our strategic priorities,” Jordan said.
The appointments broaden the expertise available to Southwest’s board as the airline works to balance operational performance with changes in how customers interact with its brand. Liberty’s experience provides a direct connection to another major travel operator, while Krishna brings a technology-driven view of how consumer platforms can use digital products and integrated services to deepen customer relationships.
Southwest operates at 121 airports across 12 countries and carried more than 134 million customers in 2025. The airline employs more than 73,000 people and says it carries more passengers flying nonstop within the United States than any other carrier.
For Southwest, adding Liberty and Krishna signals an emphasis on both travel-sector execution and the increasingly digital nature of customer engagement. Their appointments give the board additional experience in areas central to the airline’s strategy as it seeks to strengthen performance while evolving one of the industry’s most recognizable consumer brands.
