Aug. 27 (UPI) — South Korea’s SK Telecom said Thursday it teamed up with domestic AI developer Upstage and cybersecurity firms, including AhnLab, to develop a dedicated AI model focused on cybersecurity
The Seoul-based mobile operator said the consortium submitted an application to take part in a cybersecurity AI foundation model project led by the South Korean government.
SK Telecom and Upstage plan to jointly develop the model, while AhnLab and other cybersecurity companies would provide data collected through their security operations. Upstage is a promising AI startup, and AhnLab is the country’s leading cybersecurity firm.
The consortium aims to establish a feedback system under which the model will undergo development, real-world testing and independent evaluation, SK Telecom said.
The carrier noted that the country has yet to develop its own dedicated AI model trained on Korean-language cybersecurity data and capable of understanding domestic regulations.
“We will build a battle-tested security AI framework by embedding data and know-how from domestic security operations into homegrown AI models,” SK Telecom said in a statement.
“Leveraging the collective capabilities forged by domestic industry, academia and research institutes, we will expand the security AI ecosystem so that we can compete effectively in the global market.”
The share price of SK Telecom dipped 0.5% on the Seoul bourse Thursday and AhnLab edged down 0.18%, while the benchmark KOSPI gained 1.53%. Upstage is not publicly listed.
