Mike Hanley, GM’s Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), recently traded his digital security dashboards for safety glasses. He spent a full day on the plant floor at Romulus Propulsion Systems in Michigan, shadowing the operators who assemble the 10-speed automatic transmissions available on full-size trucks and SUVs.
During his visit, Mike worked side-by-side with four different Team Leaders installing outer pans and seals, hoisting heavy metal supports, sizing clutch seals, and assembling the delicate electronic valve brains that control these complex and capable transmissions. Not only did he help build the transmissions, but he also got a hands-on view of the machines that GM’s cyber security team is working hard to protect.

Connecting Plant Standardized Work to Cyber Security
Mike’s visit reinforced how critical it is for his team to keep GM’s plants running and delivering products to our customers.
“I have a deepened appreciation for our manufacturing expertise and how our teams assemble the transmissions for our vehicles,” Mike shared at the end of the day. “Seeing the process in action — made step-by-step along the line — is incredibly impressive. The GM employees who work here at Romulus are truly experts at what they do. Standardized work keeps our plants running safely and efficiently, and I see a lot of parallels to how we work to create a digitally safe and secure experience for our employees around the world.”

Romulus Propulsion Systems builds 10-speed transmissions to power our highly popular full-size trucks and SUVs. The facility runs on three daily shifts and relies on a hardworking team of about 860 employees to assemble these complex parts safely and efficiently.
