Salesforce Wants to Make Teams an AI Front Door to Its CRM
Salesforce says staff should be able to check customer records, progress a case, or approve work from Teams and other daily work tools, rather than log into its CRM. Slackbot’s latest growth figures offer an early test of whether that shift is catching on
For years, the route to a customer record, a service case, or a sales approval was simple: open Salesforce.
Salesforce now wants to make that step optional. In its latest earnings call, Marc Benioff said the company intends to bring its customer data and business processes into Slack, Microsoft Teams, Claude, and ChatGPT, so staff can deal with work without first navigating to the CRM.
“People don’t have to come to Salesforce to get work done,” Benioff, Salesforce’s Chair, CEO and Co-Founder, said.
“Salesforce comes to them in Claude, in Slack, in ChatGPT, in Teams, wherever they want to work.”
It is a clear statement of intent from a company whose product has long been associated with its own interface. Salesforce is not suggesting that the CRM disappears. It wants the CRM to sit behind the applications where employees already spend their time.
Why Salesforce is looking beyond its own interface
A support agent working in Teams might be shown the relevant case and account history before approving the next action. A sales manager might pull renewal information into a conversation where the team is already discussing the account. Salesforce would still supply the records, access rights, and workflow, but the employee would not necessarily see the familiar Salesforce screen.
That is the premise of Headless 360, introduced in April. Salesforce has made more of its platform available through APIs and Model Context Protocol tools, allowing other software to call customer data and business functions directly.
It has also introduced an Experience Layer, intended to display those actions in products including Slack, Teams, WhatsApp, Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini. Salesforce says this could take the form of interactive cards, approvals, and structured workflow steps, rather than a basic notification telling an employee to log in elsewhere.
For collaboration leaders, that changes the usual Slack-versus-Teams conversation. If staff can access and act on CRM information inside either platform, the more consequential question becomes which supplier owns the customer context, permissions, and workflow behind the interaction.
Salesforce’s argument is that it already holds much of that information. It knows the account, open service issues, previous activity, entitlement status, and the rules governing who can take the next step. The company wants to make that information useful without requiring someone to search through separate CRM screens.
Slackbot gives Salesforce some evidence
Salesforce used its Q2 FY27 earnings call to provide a progress report on Slackbot, its assistant for Slack.
Benioff said Slackbot had reached one million active users five months after launch, with active users up 150 percent quarter-on-quarter. Salesforce also said upgrades to premium Slack editions have tripled since Slackbot launched.
Robin Washington, Salesforce’s Chief Operating and Financial Officer, said Slack recorded its fastest quarter for net-new annual contract value growth since Salesforce acquired the platform.
Salesforce has also put a number on its own use of Slackbot. Washington said the product is responsible for 8.1 million annualised productivity hours across Salesforce, more than double the previous quarter. The company did not explain how it calculated that figure, so it should be read as a Salesforce estimate rather than an independently verified measure.
The figures do not prove that employees want to complete most CRM work from collaboration platforms. They do suggest that some customers are willing to pay for a more connected Slack experience, particularly one that can retrieve information and route requests across business systems.
Benioff’s description was characteristically expansive:
“AI is not trapped in a single player chat window. It is a teammate that works across all your people, finding the right agent, the right action on the flow of work, fueled by all the enterprise context that lives in Salesforce and the conversational context in Slack.”
Microsoft Teams is part of the plan
Salesforce may be the system of record, but Teams is often where conversations, meetings, files, and day-to-day coordination take place.
Salesforce’s willingness to name Teams as a destination also suggests it knows the limits of a Slack-only strategy. It can sell Slack as its preferred shared workspace while still making Salesforce information and actions available to customers that have standardised on Microsoft’s collaboration suite.
UC Today covered this model when Salesforce launched Headless 360. The company’s aim is for the CRM to handle the underlying work, while the employee sees only the information, action, or decision required at that moment.
Microsoft is building comparable connections in its own ecosystem. MCP is generally available in Copilot Studio, offering developers a way to connect Copilot-based agents with external tools, APIs, and data sources.
For customers, that should create more choice. A Teams-based employee could access Salesforce-connected functions without moving to Slack, while Salesforce remains responsible for the data and business rules behind the request.
There is, however, an important implementation question. The value will depend on whether companies can decide which actions belong in Teams, which require a full CRM view, and where managers retain oversight. Moving every task into a chat or collaboration interface would not automatically make work simpler.
Slack has a different role
Slack remains central to Salesforce’s product plans, even as the company says its data and workflows should work across Teams and other interfaces.
Salesforce recently announced Claudeforce, which combines Anthropic’s Claude with Salesforce data, workflows, and business rules. It expects general availability in September, around Dreamforce.
Miguel Milano, Salesforce President and COO, drew a line between Slack and Claudeforce during the call.
“Slack, you are working with your teams, is a multiplayer surface,” Milano said.
“With Cowork, you and Claudeforce or Salesforce before Claude, we are simply going deep and researching, understanding your business.”
In Salesforce’s framing, Slack is where teams work together, while Claudeforce is for individual research. Headless 360 is the technology that makes Salesforce functions available in Slack, Teams, and other supported interfaces.
Salesforce said Slackbot has reached one million active users, while upgrades to premium Slack editions have tripled since its launch. For now, those are the clearest indicators of how the company’s strategy is landing with customers.
What is Salesforce Headless 360?
Headless 360 makes Salesforce data, workflows, and business functions available through APIs, MCP tools, and command-line tools. It is designed to let users access Salesforce functions without always opening the CRM interface.
Can Salesforce work in Microsoft Teams?
Salesforce says Headless 360 can deliver its data and workflow actions in Microsoft Teams, alongside Slack, WhatsApp, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and other compatible interfaces.
What is Slackbot?
Slackbot is Salesforce’s assistant for Slack. Salesforce said it reached one million active users within five months of launch and that premium Slack upgrades have tripled since it launched.
Is Salesforce replacing Slack with Claude?
No. Salesforce has positioned Slack as its shared, team-based workspace. It has described Claudeforce, built with Anthropic, as a tool for deeper individual research using Salesforce data and workflows.
