32-year-old techie earning ₹2.5 lakh a month says he still does not want to work
A 32-year-old tech professional earning ₹2.5 lakh a month has sparked a discussion on Reddit after saying that even a fully remote job, a supportive employer and a workload of only a few hours a day have failed to make him want to work.
The software professional shared his experience on Reddit’s r/developersIndia community, saying he has tried changing several aspects of his career but continues to feel the same way about work.
He said he enjoys coding and considers himself among the strongest members of his team in technical skills. Despite this, he said he works for only a couple of hours on most weekdays and still feels no desire to continue working.
“I don’t like working at all. In fact, it feel like I don’t want to work at all,” he wrote, adding that the same feeling extends to his own business and passion projects.
The techie also ruled out burnout as an explanation, pointing to his limited working hours. “It’s not even burnout, as I’m hardly spending a few hours each workday,” he said.
According to his post, he has attempted to improve his professional situation by changing jobs, moving to remote work and increasing his earnings. His monthly income rose from ₹9,000 to ₹2.5 lakh over 10 years.
However, the changes have not altered how he feels about employment. “Every weekend, I wish Mondays to never come,” he wrote. He added that while working feels like a waste of time, simply resting and doing nothing does not feel satisfying either.
Retirement is also not an immediate option for him. The techie said he began investing only three years ago and currently has a liquid corpus of ₹60 lakh.
“I can’t retire too,” he wrote. “Does anyone feel the same way? Stuck somewhere?”
The post drew responses from other Reddit users who said they could relate to his experience. One user said the situation was similar for them, although they earned considerably less, and suggested finding something that could bring excitement outside routine work.
Another Reddit user said the sentiment was common among people working in IT and argued that income alone does not necessarily change how people feel about their jobs.
A third user, who said they were older, had a family and had accumulated more savings, described experiencing similar feelings. The user said they often wanted to relax, sleep, eat and play, while still occasionally enjoying the satisfaction of completing tasks at work. They said they were trying to build a corpus of ₹2-3 crore before retiring.
Another Reddit user offered a broader explanation, arguing that modern screen-based work is relatively new compared with activities such as walking, resting and spending time outdoors. The user suggested improving one’s routine, going for walks and spending time with close ones in an effort to regain motivation.
