OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio, a four-year-old startup that develops artificial intelligence (AI) software for biotechnology companies, as the company expands its tools for life sciences research.
OpenAI announced the acquisition on its website on October 20. The financial terms were not disclosed. Orchestra Bio had reportedly raised about $20 million by 2025 from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Atria and 8VC.
Orchestra Bio develops AI agents designed to help biotechnology companies manage drug discovery operations. Its software assists with administrative and logistical tasks, including financial tracking and scheduling clinical trials.
OpenAI said Orchestra Bio’s team and technology would join its work on Rosalind, an AI model for life sciences research, and Rosalind Workbench, a related tool designed to help researchers plan experiments and analyse results.
The company has said that Rosalind has attracted customers including pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Novo Nordisk.
OpenAI and rival AI company Anthropic have been expanding their products for business customers, including tools aimed at specialised professional work.
In Orchestra Bio’s case, OpenAI is incorporating the startup’s team and technology into its existing life sciences efforts rather than launching a competing product independently.
