The Northern New York Power Proceeds Allocation Board made the recommendation last week during its meeting in Massena, saying Corning Inc. would use the funds to repurpose an existing warehouse at the Canton location.
The funding request comes as the allocations board considers an 18th round of funding, which is part of an economic development program.
Overall, the project would cost $10 million total, expanding on ceramic manufacturing at the facility.
Corning officials said in the proposal that the company would repurpose an existing warehouse and use targeted building renovations to install a continuous 24/7 slip-cast production line.
“Proceeds funding will support related costs, including electrical infrastructure improvements required to serve thermal processing and forming systems essential to production, as well as specialized energy-efficient equipment needed to operate the new line reliably and efficiently,” NYPA Senior Program Manager for Economic Development Patricia Wilson said.
NYPA officials said the expansion project would not only support the existing 344 jobs on site but also allow Corning to create five more full-time positions while strengthening the firm’s manufacturing in the region.
“Aspects of this project that present a strong case for the recommendation include significance to the region’s economy because it anchors long-term advanced manufacturing investment in Canton, strengthens the local tax base, and reinforces the county’s position as a competitive location for high-value industrial growth,” Wilson said.
Wilson said the strategic investment would enhance the facility’s manufacturing and increase competitiveness in the region as Corning continues to make investments in Canton.
