While students will see the benefits of this partnership, they won’t actually get to use it.
SAN ANTONIO – Northside ISD is solidifying AI as another tool for teachers district wide. The transition comes through a partnership with the developer of ChatGPT.
The district will soon provide teachers a new tool to use in the classroom. ChatGPT’s parent company, Open AI, announcing a partnership with 55 school districts across the country.
It’s called ‘ChatGPT for teachers’.
“It really allows us to leave the teachers in the driver’s seat, essentially to choose, if and when these tools would be beneficial in their space,” said NISD’s superintendent of technology services, Kris Trejo.
He says OpenAI first launched ChatGPT for teachers last year. Through this free partnership, the district will be able to maintain safety and privacy.
They’re calling it a ‘walled garden’ approach.
“We’re taking a tool that was probably they had access to and cleaning it up, putting some bubble wrap around it and ensuring that it’s safe and secure to use within the school environment,” Trejo said. “I think that’s our responsibility as an I.T group, as a school district, and not just with AI tools, but — we do this with the vast majority of our tools.”
The AI service is blocked to students on NISD’s network. Teachers can use the software for support, and to collaborate with each other according to a press release from OpenAI.
The workspace is built to protect students’ information and will not be used to train their models by default.
District officials expect to start using the specialized system in the next few months.
