Mich. (News 10) – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is urging residents to take steps to protect their personal information following a series of major data breaches affecting people across the state
The warning comes after recent breaches involving TransUnion and Corewell Health, 700Credit LLC and Munson Healthcare.
Nessel is also renewing her call for state lawmakers to require companies to promptly notify the attorney general’s office when personal information is compromised.
A package of bills that would establish those reporting requirements and strengthen protections against data breaches passed the Michigan Senate but has remained stalled in the House for nearly a year
“Data breaches are surging, and delays in reporting leave Michigan families vulnerable to identity theft,” Nessel said. “It is past time to enact stronger consumer protections and align Michigan with a majority of other states across the country.”
Nessel also encouraged residents to reduce their risk by being cautious of phishing emails and using strong, unique passwords for online accounts.
