Meta’s new AI agent, Muse, reached No. 1 on Apple’s U.S. App Store on Sept. 18, ten days after launch, <a href="https://www.implicator.ai/metas-muse-tops-us-app-store-ahead-of-chatgpt-ten-days-after-launch/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>according to the market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, racking up more than 730,000 U.S. downloads over that stretch. Meta’s app is now ahead of ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude and Meta-owned Instagram on Apple’s free iPhone chart.
Muse’s rise is similar to ChatGPT’s App Store launch in 2023, when the OpenAI app had 697,000 U.S. downloads in its first eight days, according to the app intelligence firm data.ai. At the time, ChatGPT was still ranked No. 3 on the U.S. free chart, according to a snapshot by Appfigures, another app intelligence firm.
What is Muse?
Meta launched Muse on Sept. 8. Unlike chatbots that only answer questions, Muse is designed to complete tasks on a user’s behalf, including sending emails, booking travel and making purchases, after being connected to their apps and personal accounts. It is available in the U.S. on iOS, Android, Meta’s WhatsApp messaging service and the web. Muse is free to start, with paid tiers at $20 and $100 a month.
Wall Street responded to the early climb. JPMorgan upgraded Meta from Neutral to Overweight and lifted its price target on the stock from $640 to $820, CNBC reported. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a Mac version of Muse on Sept. 17.
Muse’s download pace still trails what ChatGPT recorded on a daily basis in 2023. Muse averaged roughly 73,000 U.S. downloads a day over its first 10 days, while ChatGPT averaged 87,000 a day over its first eight, according to the two firms’ figures.
The release of Muse came weeks after Meta agreed in August to a multistate settlement over social media harms reported at up to $18 billion. In an Oppenheimer & Co. survey of 1,500 U.S. consumers conducted around the launch, 8 percent said they would trust Meta with their passwords, compared with 30 percent for Google, 23 percent for Apple and 16 percent for ChatGPT. Another 58 percent said they would not share their passwords with any AI agent.
Muse is only available in the U.S., through Meta’s iOS and Android apps, its WhatsApp messaging service and on the web. Muse’s Android performance has lagged. On Google Play, the app was ranked No. 338 in the Productivity category as of last week which cited Sensor Tower
