A startup called Hyphenate says it’s quickly helping enterprises to overcome their fear of artificial intelligence hallucinations and trust it to fully automate their financial operations after raising $45 million in early-stage funding today.
The Series A round was led by Nexus Venture Partners and saw participation from B Capital and existing backers Foundation Capital, BoldCap and Gaia Ventures, bringing the startup’s total amount raised to date to $54 million.
Hyphenate, officially known as Prosperous Commerce Inc., has built an autonomous finance platform that uses self-learning AI agents. Those agents are designed to familiarize themselves with businesses’ financial operations so that they can take over the work of the traditional chief financial officer, performing tasks such as general ledger accounting, treasury management, order-to-cash, procure-to-pay and financial reporting. Its agents integrate with companies’ existing enterprise resource planning, accounting and banking systems to avoid the need for expensive software overhauls.
The startup, which was previously called Maximor until it rebranded earlier this month, is led by co-founder and Chief Executive Ramnandan Krishnamurthy (pictured, right, alongside co-founder Ajay Krishna Amudan), who concedes that corporate finance has always been extremely challenging for AI to get a handle on. Because of unforgiving regulatory requirements and financial reporting standards, few CFOs have been willing to tolerate the risk of AI agents that could potentially hallucinate and mess up vital calculations regarding their finances.
In a recent study, Hyphenate highlighted the widespread apprehension of CFOs regarding AI. Though 96% of survey respondents identified alleviating the burden of repetitive and manual tasks as one of AI’s major benefits, only 14% said they actually trust the technology to do that without making mistakes. Moreover, 97% of CFOs insisted that human supervision of AI work is essential.
However, Hyphenate believes it can overcome this apprehensiveness by changing the way AI agents learn and execute their work. Rather than asking human financial experts to create prompts and design rule-based workflows for agents, the startup trains them on customer’s historical financial workflows.
Moreover, Hyphenate also creates a detailed record of its agents’ work, so that every autonomous action they make is preserved, building an evidentiary paper trail that can easily be audited if the need arises. Should a human financial officer handle an exception, the agents will remember that decision as a kind of precedent, so that they can follow that example with their future work. This is backed by unambiguous operational guardrails and a requirement for human oversight at key moments, when qualitative judgment is required, Krishnamurthy said.
“Every finance team has a long list of work it does because somebody has to do it,” Krishnamurthy said. “Our customers are watching that list shrink in production. Once a team sees the system handle one workflow to an auditor’s standard, they hand it the next one.”
In other words, Krishnamurthy says, customers generally test Hyphenate’s AI agents with one or two financial tasks, see that they do the job perfectly, and start to trust it more. They then give it much greater responsibilities. It’s a pattern that has been repeated at multiple early adapters, Krishnamurthy said, enabling the startup to grow its customer base by 11 times and its revenue by 86 times in the last year, though it didn’t provide more specifics.
Hyphenate says it currently counts six publicly traded companies as customers, including Groupon Inc., Synthesia Ltd., HiBid and Mini Melts USA Inc. Those clients have eliminated up to 90% of their routine manual financial work, while reducing audit exceptions by an average of 75%.
One of its most eager adopters is HiBid, which has used Hyphenate to process more than $2.5 billion in gross merchandise value so far, while reducing the time it spends on month-end closing from three weeks to a day. Nexus Venture Partners’ Abhishek Sharma said Hyphenate’s success so far is due to its laser focus on accuracy, controls and auditability. “Hyphenate has built around that bar from the beginning and the expansion we are seeing inside customer deployments shows what becomes possible once the system earns the right to take on more work,” he said.
Given its early traction, Hyphenate now has much bigger ambitions, setting its sights on automating strategic financial operations for its customers. It believes it can provide continuous visibility into a company’s financial health, enabling more precise forecasting and capital allocation.
