Do you juggle personal, work, and burner accounts on one Android phone? Google may have quietly linked them all together behind your back. A recent report from Lifehacker highlights a concerning shift in Google’s account policies. The search giant has begun verifying and attaching phone numbers across multiple profiles without asking.
Lifehackerrevealed a troubling new practice. Google has been “automatically connecting Android users’ phone numbers to every Google account.” This linking occurs across every profile signed into your device. It happens completely “without requesting consent to do so,” school, and personal data strictly separated. Yet, Google’s automated verification tears down that digital boundary
Phone numbers serve as powerful digital identifiers across modern online platforms. When multiple profiles share a number, trackers can easily connect your activities. Separating your accounts prevents accidental data sharing between your workplace and your personal life.
Many users only discovered the change after receiving surprise confirmation emails from Google. The problem traces back to an update in Google’s support documentation about a year ago. Google quietly turned phone verification into an opt-out feature by default. Lifehacker points out that Google “adds your phone number to all Google Accounts that are signed in.” This applies to your current accounts and any accounts you add in the future. If you do not want your identities blended, you must take action.

You can shut down automatic verification directly within your Android settings. First, open your phone’s Settings app. Tap Google, or Google services and preferences. Head to All Services, then choose Privacy & Security. From there, find the Phone number verification menu. Switch the toggle to off so Google stops syncing your digits.
However, turning off the setting does not undo past syncing. Lifehacker warns, “Updating this setting does not disconnect phone numbers and Google accounts that have already been linked.” To remove your number, visit the Google Account Personal Info dashboard. Click your avatar in the corner to switch between each logged-in account. Select the Phone section under each profile. Delete any phone numbers you want kept separate from that account.
Finally, audit your Security and sign-in tools. Lifehacker notes that deleting a number here does not remove it from two-step verification. It also stays active in apps like Google Pay until deleted separately. Check your settings every few months to ensure Google does not re-enable the feature. Taking these few minutes protects your personal boundaries across all your profiles.
