Slovenia’s GEN Group generated a net profit of EUR 159.7 million in 2025. A year earlier, in 2024, profit stood at EUR 185.8 million.
The better than projected financial performance was primarily driven by effective cost control, total electricity generation remaining above target throughout the year, and successful portfolio management through power trading, according to the financial report for 2025.
Additionally, no material business risks materialized during 2025, the report reads.
In 2023, the company achieved a profit of EUR 204.5 million, compared to EUR 23.6 million in 2022.
Earnings from electricity sales exceeded projections
The parent company, GEN Energija, also surpassed its plans, thanks to stable operations of power plants and a successful trading strategy.
The achieved difference in price (price margin) was higher than anticipated due to market price movements, open positions, increased output at the Krško nuclear power plant (JEK), provision of ancillary services, the operation of the Brestanica thermal power plant on the day-ahead market, and active portfolio management.
Of note, Brestanica uses natural gas and fuel oil.
Low water levels toward the end of the year adversely impacted the price margin by reducing hydropower output compared to plan, as did price regulation in the retail consumer segment.
In 2025, GEN produced 3,427 GWh of electricity – 98.9% of which originated from low-carbon and renewable sources: nuclear, hydro, and solar energy. A year earlier, generation stood at 3,545 GWh.
Investments reached EUR 107.5 million last year, more than double the EUR 50 million recorded in 2024.
In 2025, one half was invested in existing assets, primarily Krško, while the remainder went toward development projects: documentation development and a spatial plan for the second unit of the nuclear power plant Krško – Krško 2 project (JEK2), the acquisition of Gorenjske Elektrarne, and the acquisition of R-Energy 1, a company developing a battery energy storage system (BESS).
Management: The company’s generation capacity served as a key mechanism for mitigating price spikes
In a letter, signed by Chief Executive Officer Nada Drobne Popović and Business Director Bruno Glaser, the management wrote that the past year was marked by successful operations alongside stable and reliable performance across all generation units.
The management stressed that in a demanding and volatile environment, GEN Group further consolidated its role as the key provider of reliable, low-carbon, and long-term sustainable power supply in Slovenia.
Continued electricity price regulation for households significantly reduced revenue
At the same time, the group provided domestic customers with energy at affordable and predictable prices under pre-agreed terms, even though the continued regulation of household electricity prices during the first months of the year significantly reduced the company’s revenue, according to the letter.
The management concluded that the generation capacity has ensured long-term operational stability and served as an important mechanism to buffer against price surges in energy markets.
