Festive Hiring Seen Rising 15-20% in 2026 as Quick Commerce, Retail Drive Demand: TeamLease
India’s festive season hiring is expected to grow 15-20% in 2026, in line with the previous year, as strong demand from e-commerce, quick commerce, retail, logistics and FMCG sectors continues to fuel temporary workforce requirements, according to TeamLease Services’ Festive Season Workforce Report 2026.
The report said festive hiring has evolved from large-scale recruitment drives focused on headcount addition to a more structured and technology-led workforce strategy centred on productivity, speed and customer experience.
The hiring cycle, which begins around Independence Day and extends through Raksha Bandhan, Dussehra, Diwali, Christmas, New Year and the winter wedding season, has become a critical period for employers managing seasonal demand. TeamLease said companies are increasingly investing in digital onboarding, workforce readiness programmes and incentive structures to ensure operational efficiency during peak sales periods.
A major contributor to hiring demand is the rapid expansion of quick commerce, which has moved beyond grocery deliveries into categories such as electronics, beauty products and festive gifting. According to the report, quick commerce accounted for 12% of festive spending in 2025, up from 8% a year earlier, creating demand for employees across dark stores, neighbourhood fulfilment centres and micro-warehouses.
The report noted that festive e-commerce gross merchandise value exceeded ₹1.2 lakh crore in 2025, registering around 27% year-on-year growth. High-value categories including smartphones, consumer electronics and large home appliances accounted for nearly 60% of overall festive sales, supported by promotional offers and consumer financing schemes.
TeamLease identified several structural drivers supporting hiring growth this year, including the rise of quick commerce, increasing consumption in Tier II and Tier III cities, longer festive sales windows and the growing use of physical retail stores as local fulfilment centres for online orders. The company expects regional consumption centres outside major metros to play an increasingly important role in workforce deployment.
An analysis of TeamLease’s frontline workforce data showed the median age of employees declined to 26.7 years in the second half of 2025 from 28.2 years a year earlier. Median monthly compensation increased marginally to ₹20,525 from ₹20,282.
The report expects gross salaries to rise by 8-10% during the second half of 2026, although net take-home salary growth may be limited to 5-8% due to labour-related regulatory changes.
Workforce deployment continues to be concentrated in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Karnataka. TeamLease expects festive hiring growth to be relatively stronger in southern and western markets, driven by expanding retail and logistics networks, even as absolute hiring numbers increase across all regions.
Warehouse and fulfilment personnel, including pickers, packers and dark store loaders, are expected to remain the most sought-after workforce category during the festive period. Retail associates, cashiers, in-store promoters, field sales executives and technical support professionals are also likely to see strong demand. At the same time, employers are creating new roles linked to inventory management, warehouse automation, fulfilment coordination and returns processing as retail operations become increasingly technology-driven.
To improve retention during peak demand periods, companies are expanding the use of attendance bonuses, surge pay, referral incentives, productivity-linked rewards and learning-based wage benefits. The report said such measures are becoming essential to reduce attrition and maintain workforce stability during high-volume sale events.
Balasubramanian A, SVP and Business Head at TeamLease Services, said festive hiring is now focused on precision hiring rather than volume-led recruitment. He added that organisations are seeking skilled frontline workers capable of supporting speed, operational efficiency and customer experience across both physical and digital commerce channels.
