The FDA has authorized Juul to market three new e-cigarette products
The products include Juul2 devices and tobacco- and menthol-flavored pods.
The marketing grant covers the optional age-verification technology in the Juul2 system. It comes with an app that helps ensure users are 21 and over.
The FDA cites research showing people who switched to the products were exposed to fewer harmful chemicals. The agency says some stopped smoking altogether.
Many health experts and pediatricians have criticized federal decisions to authorize products like Juul, as we’ve reported from the First Alert Safety Desk.
The concern is how appealing the products are and the risk of nicotine addiction, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
In a statement, the FDA said: “The FDA determined that the added benefit to adults who smoke cigarettes is sufficient to outweigh the risks of the menthol-flavored product, including youth appeal.”
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has argued in the past for banning the company’s e-cigarettes, saying: “Availability will only perpetuate the uptake of nicotine use and subsequent addiction that we are working so hard to stop.”
The FDA says the tobacco- and menthol-flavored e-cigarette pods authorized today are equivalent to a 1.5% to 1.6% nicotine concentration. This is lower than the three and five percent authorized last summer.
