Ranked third nationwide in the e-commerce index, Da Nang has many advantages for expanding online businesses. However, simply listing products on e-commerce platforms or opening more stores is not enough. What businesses need is more customers, higher sales, and increased profits.

Now that it’s listed, will it sell?
Da Nang ranks third nationwide in the 2025 e-commerce index, achieving 28.1 points, after Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. However, this high ranking does not answer the question of how much more goods local businesses will sell or how much profit they will earn.
This issue was raised at the workshop “Promoting e-commerce and digital payments – Driving forces for economic growth in Da Nang city in 2026,” organized by the Department of Industry and Trade on October 22nd.
Dr. Nguyen Duc Tai, Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Anti-Counterfeiting and Trade Protection Association, analyzed that an increase in online shopping sales does not necessarily bring a corresponding increase to the local economy.
People in Da Nang can shop online more and more, but if the goods are produced elsewhere, and the distribution and accompanying services are also handled by businesses outside the city, then the value retained within the city is not significant.
Therefore, the number of stores opened, businesses participating in training, or transaction volume on platforms cannot be used as the sole measure of e-commerce development effectiveness.
Taking the example of a specialty product manufacturer receiving support to list their products on the platform, Mr. Tai raised the question of whether that facility would find new customers, sell more products, and how much profit would remain after deducting packaging, shipping, and sales costs.
If customers who previously shopped in-store now order online but overall revenue doesn’t increase, opening an additional sales channel doesn’t necessarily translate into growth. In fact, the increased costs could even reduce profits.
Based on this reality, Mr. Tai suggested that Da Nang select groups of businesses, cooperatives, production facilities, and craft villages with suitable products to support online business.
Instead of just guiding customers on how to open a store, the support program needs to delve deeper into improving quality, packaging, product presentation, delivery, and cost control. Effectiveness should be measured by profitable orders, returning customers, and the potential for production expansion.
Meanwhile, Mr. Huynh Xuan Son, Deputy Director of the Da Nang Department of Industry and Trade, acknowledged that there is still a disparity in the ability to apply technology among businesses. Many establishments face difficulties in standardizing product information, organizing delivery, finding personnel with digital skills, and protecting customer rights.
Over the past period, the city has supported the promotion of OCOP products and local specialties on online platforms, organized supply and demand connections, e-commerce fairs, and piloted e-commerce models at the commune and ward levels.
However, to ensure businesses can continue operating after support programs, Mr. Son emphasized the importance of connecting sellers with e-commerce platforms, payment and shipping providers. In particular, small businesses, cooperatives, and household businesses need user-friendly, cost-effective solutions that they can sustain throughout their operations.
Opening new markets, maintaining value in Da Nang.
Mr. Bui Huy Hoang, Deputy Director of the E-commerce Development Center under the E-commerce Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade , commented that online exporting is creating more opportunities for manufacturers with suitable products but limited resources to expand their markets.
Instead of having to build an overseas distribution network from scratch, businesses can find customers and partners through digital platforms. However, setting up a storefront doesn’t guarantee immediate sales.
To export goods abroad, businesses must ensure supply, meet the requirements of the importing market, calculate warehousing and transportation costs, handle payments, and resolve any issues that may arise during transactions.
Regarding Da Nang, Mr. Hoang assessed its geographical location, logistics infrastructure, and development orientation as notable advantages.
Once infrastructure and related services are completed, the Da Nang Free Trade Zone can attract import-export businesses, warehousing, goods distribution, and facilitate the development of cross-border e-commerce.
However, this opportunity lies not just in having more warehouses or increasing transportation capacity. The crucial factor is whether local businesses have the ability to participate in the supply chain, get their products to customers, and benefit from the new market.
To achieve that, business management capabilities also need to be improved, even at the smaller establishments.
Returning to the topic of e-commerce effectiveness, Dr. Nguyen Duc Tai analyzed that digital payments would be more practical for businesses if combined with order management, invoicing, delivery, and revenue and expenditure tracking.
For example, a store that sells both in-store and online can use management tools to minimize errors, control inventory, identify best-selling items, and track net revenue after expenses.
However, the application of technology must be appropriate to the scale and financial capabilities of each facility. The costs of software, payments, transportation, and maintenance of services all need to be calculated before implementation.
A business that receives initial support in using technology but later lacks the financial means to continue operating will find it difficult to maintain long-term effectiveness.
For small businesses, technology is only truly useful when it helps facilitate sales, simplify management, and reduce business costs.
