The Childersburg Water, Sewer and Gas system said its supervisory control and data acquisition, or SCADA, system was targeted in a cyberattack late last month.
The attack happened July 27 and targeted a programmable logic controller, or PLC, within the SCADA system. The utility said multiple other public utilities also were targeted.
After the issue was identified, the SCADA system was taken offline while the utility continued operating without interruption. Officials said manual systems were not affected by the attack, and water service continued as normal.

The utility emphasized that at no point was the public water supply in any danger.
Childersburg Water, Sewer and Gas reported the incident to the FBI and other agencies in accordance with standard operating procedures.
The utility continues to operate without the SCADA system while workers install additional security measures designed to protect it from future attacks. Officials expect that work to be completed in about two weeks.
