(QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Preferred Parking Service, LLC, a Charlotte-based company that provides parking services throughout the Southeast, has reported a data security breach affecting tens of thousands of people, including more than 61,000 North Carolina residents.
The company, headquartered in Charlotte, reported the breach to state officials in mid-August.
Preferred Parking Service said the security incident occurred in early June and involved hackers or unauthorized access to electronically stored information.
The company said it reviewed the files involved and on July 30 determined who exactly was impacted within their systems.
According to the North Carolina filing, an estimated 72,912 people nationwide have been affected, including 61,335 North Carolina residents. According to the state filing, the compromised information involved credit and debit card information.
“We are giving these people a lot of our personal information because we are their customers; at the very, very least, you can protect our information,” Clarence Bonebrake, of Charlotte, said.
The company said access controls, passwords, and unique user permissions protected the hacked information. Preferred Parking Service also said the incident did not involve ransomware, a business email compromise, or employee data.
The company said it notified affected North Carolina residents on August 14.
“72,000 people who will now be harassed on their phones, get emails targeting them, probably eventually get spam calls. AI is going very far with the replication of voices,” Bonebrake said.
South Carolina impact
South Carolina officials have confirmed that 5,176 South Carolina residents were affected.
The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs lists Preferred Parking Service, LLC among its security breach notices, with the company reporting the breach on August 14.
Other states that were impacted by the breach include Vermont and Massachusetts.
