CenterPoint said it activated its cybersecurity incident response protocols, opened an investigation with third-party cybersecurity experts and took steps to further protect its systems. The company reassured in its filings that its services have “not been impacted and remains operational and undisrupted.”
Based on its preliminary findings, CenterPoint said “an unauthorized third party obtained personal information relating to a portion of the Company’s customers” through one of its external-facing systems.
The company said it is still working to determine how many customers were affected and what personal information was involved. CenterPoint also said it reported the matter to law enforcement and plans to notify affected customers and regulatory authorities as required by law.
Stay informed, and entertained.
The filing came one day after the Houston Chronicle reported CenterPoint was facing several proposed class action lawsuits from customers in Texas, Indiana and Minnesota over an alleged data breach. The Chronicle reported the lawsuits claimed cybercriminals accessed customer information including names, phone numbers, addresses, billing information and Social Security numbers.
Chron reached out to CenterPoint for additional comment and asked whether the SEC filing was connected to the lawsuits.
“Our filing speaks for itself,” the company said in a statement.
