Officials: Driver shot by BPD after striking officer during attempted tow near Lexington Market
A 29-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot by a police officer near Lexington Market Saturday night, according to Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley.
During a press conference, Worley said that the officer was issuing a citation for a vehicle with suspended and expired tags around 9:30 p.m. in the 300 block of North Eutaw Street. While waiting for a tow truck, a man approached the officer and initially denied owning the car before admitting it was his.
Worley said that the officer allowed the man to enter the vehicle to retrieve his belongings. While waiting for a second police officer to arrive, it was then that the man put the car in drive and accelerated into the officer
As the officer ordered the driver to stop, the man reversed and accelerated again, dragging the officer a short distance. At this point, Worley says the officer fired at least three rounds into the vehicle, striking the driver. The officer pulled the driver from the vehicle and rendered aid until medics arrived.
Worley said that the police officer was also taken to the hospital to treat neck and back injuries.
Worley said Mayor Brandon Scott has reviewed the body-camera footage, and that DOJ has been notified of the shooting.
