As more consumers buy groceries and household goods through online shopping, the center of shopping is also rapidly moving from offline stores to online.
According to a survey conducted by credit card platform Card Gorilla on the 28th of “Where do you usually shop these days?” on website visitors, 54.2% of the respondents chose “online” such as Naver, Curly, and Coupang. The survey was conducted for three weeks from the 21st of last month to the 10th of this month, and a total of 3,986 people participated.
2,162 respondents chose online, more than half of the total. Large supermarkets ranked second with 19.9% (793 people), followed by convenience stores with 7.9% (316 people) and food materials marts and direct sales outlets with 7.5% (300 people). Department stores accounted for 4.4 percent, corporate supermarkets 3.9 percent, and traditional markets 2.1 percent.
Compared to the Chuseok shopping survey conducted by Card Gorilla in August 2023, where large discount stores ranked first with 42.1 percent and online with 24.3 percent, consumers’ shopping methods have rapidly changed to online-oriented.
The scale of online food trade is also expanding. According to data from the National Data Agency cited by Cardgorilla, online shopping food transactions amounted to about 52.3 trillion won last year, up 10.4% from the previous year. Online household goods transactions also increased 4.4 percent to about 19.8 trillion won.
Increasing demand for online shopping is also affecting card benefit choices. In Card Gorilla’s customized card search, the search volume for “online shopping” benefits in the first half of this year increased by 16% from the second half of last year.
Shinhan Card Discount Plan+ offers 30,000 won cash back once a year if you pay more than 30,000 won at E-Mart, Traders’ Wholesale Club, and Lotte Mart. Online shopping, marts, outlets, and general merchandise stores can receive a 10% discount on each area, while regular payments for Coupang Wow and Naver Plus membership will also be discounted by 20%.
Some products do not have performance conditions for the previous month. Hyundai Card’s ZERO Up (point type) earns 1.2% at domestic and foreign merchants and provides additional savings if you make a single payment of more than 100,000 won at online malls such as Naver Plus Store, Coupang, SSG Dotcom, and large discount stores such as E-Mart, Nonghyup Hanaro Mart, and Lotte Mart.
Ko Seung-hoon, CEO of Card Gorilla, said, “The preference for online shopping without time and place constraints is on the rise,” adding, “The use of shopping membership and simple payment benefits as well as traditional offline store benefits is expected to increase.”
