Alex Aster’s latest novel, Starside, is already making big moves. An adult romantasy, the title officially made its debut this week on the Amazon Charts, landing at No. 16 on the shopping juggernaut’s best-selling fiction-book tally.
Released March 31, 2026, the novel is the first of a new series for Aster, 31, but also a new genre.
Starside marks Aster’s foray into romantasy, a genre defined by high-stakes fantasy worldbuilding and explicit romantic storylines. A darker take on the category, her tale follows a young woman named Aris, who leaves her home of Stormside for the divine, enchanted land of Starside, where she hopes to take revenge on the gods after a goddess burned her village and killed her family.
One of the novel’s central magical elements is its sentient swords, which contain power that isn’t inherited or bought, but claimed. That means even an orphaned blacksmith’s apprentice like Aris can potentially challenge the powerful elites by wielding one.
Acclaimed for its breakneck pace and nonstop plot twists, Starside offers readers an inherently different magic system, where characters can claim power rather than just inherit it. With the central plot focused on legendary, sentient swords scattered throughout the world, this means anyone—including an orphaned blacksmith’s apprentice like Aris—can inherently level the playing field against elite royals by simply possessing a blade.
Interestingly, Aster turned to Taylor Swift for creative fuel while building Starside. According to <a href="https://people.com/alex-aster-taylor-swift-fortnight-starside-interview-exclusive-11936106″ rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>People, the author reached for the superstar’s 2024 album,The Tortured Poets Department, repeatedly, listening to “Fortnight” on a loop for its emotional calm and “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” because she felt its themes echoed Aris‘ complicated relationship with power, beauty, and danger.
“Aris has a lot of rage, but she’s also very kind, and she loves beautiful things in the world,” she said. “She loves dresses and balls, and she loves the glimmering side of Starside, but she does recognize that it’s dangerous.”
Aster first established herself as a children’s and young adult author before breaking through with her Lightlark series. She made her debut in 2020 withCurse of the Night Witch, which received critical praise from Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly, and more, before becoming a summer reading pick on Good Morning America and winning an International Latino Book Award.
Her breakthrough came with Lightlark, which became a publishing sensation after Aster posted a TikTok pitching its premise in 2021. The video exploded, receiving more than a million views, and within a week, the novel went to auction, resulting in a six-figure deal.
Lightlark, the first in the series, debuted as an instant No. 1 bestsellerin 2022, with the momentum carrying over to Nightbane and Skyshade in 2023 and 2024. Before the saga even hit shelves,Universal Pictures and Temple Hill, the production company behind the Twilightfilms, scooped up film rights, with Aster aboard as an executive producer. The first adaptation is currently in development.
Expanding into adult fiction and romantasy, Aster made her adult contemporary debut with her enemies-to-lovers storySummer in the Cityin March 2025, another instant bestseller that was quickly optioned for a feature film adaptation by Warner Bros. Discovery‘s New Line Cinema. That project, too, remains in early development stages, per Variety.
Now, with Starside already climbing the bestseller and most-sold charts, Aster is entering another potentially massive chapter. The book is the first in a planned series, and she has already finished the sequel, Stormside. In other words, readers won’t have to wait too long to return to Starside.
