Listen Labs Withdraws From $125 Million Funding Round Amid Possible Salesforce Acquisition

A rare reversal in venture capital has put the AI research startup at the center of a much larger corporate possibility.
Startup Listen Labs, which uses voice-based artificial intelligence to interview customers, walked away from previously agreed terms for a $125 million Series C funding round. After the round, the company was expected to be valued at $1.5 billion, with Menlo Ventures set to lead the deal.
The deal ultimately fell through. In the venture capital market, a startup backing out of already signed funding terms is unusual and is generally viewed negatively by investors.
Listen Labs Could Be Acquired by Salesforce
Negotiations for Salesforce to acquire Listen Labs are believed to be the likely reason the funding was canceled. The potential deal is reportedly worth around $2 billion, although talks are still ongoing and could end without an agreement.
If the Salesforce deal does not go through, venture investors expect Listen Labs to return to the capital markets. In that case, the startup could seek funding at a valuation of $2 billion or more.
At the same time, one person familiar with negotiations over Salesforce’s acquisitions believes that a valuation equivalent to 67 times annual revenue could prove too high for a potential buyer.
Acquiring Listen Labs could strengthen Salesforce’s position in artificial intelligence. The startup’s technology enables companies to predict customer needs and analyze their responses to products and changes more quickly.
How Listen Labs’ Technology Works
Listen Labs was founded in 2023 by Florian Jungermann, a former German champion in competitive programming, and Alfred Walforß, who previously founded recruiting startup Bemlo. The entrepreneurs met while studying for master’s degrees at Harvard University.
Listen Labs’ artificial intelligence independently generates survey questions and conducts audio and video interviews with customers. The system then turns the conversation recordings into reports and PowerPoint presentations similar to the materials typically prepared by market research professionals.
Traditional consumer research can be expensive and take several weeks. Listen Labs reduces the cost and time required for such projects, helping companies assess customer needs and improve their products more quickly.
The startup’s customers include Microsoft, Canva, Anthropic, and Sweetgreen. Its competitors include Simile, Outset, Keplar, and Aaru. Some platforms automate interviews with real people, while Simile and Aaru model consumer behavior using artificial intelligence without conducting such conversations.
Financial Performance and Competition
- Listen Labs’ current annualized revenue is approximately $30 million.
- In July, Simile raised $200 million in a Series B round at a $2 billion valuation.
- In January, Listen Labs announced that it had raised $69 million in a Series B round at a $500 million valuation.
- Listen Labs’ previous round was led by Ribbit Capital, with participation from Sequoia, Conviction, and Pear VC.
Listen Labs, Salesforce, Menlo Ventures, and Simile did not immediately comment on the negotiations, the canceled funding round, or the potential deal. Until the parties finalize an agreement, the terms of any future financing or acquisition of the startup remain uncertain.
