York College Students Explore Cybersecurity, Screen Time and Online Radicalization

How safe are the digital spaces where young people spend their time? On The Spark, we’ll talk with York College students and members of the Tech Insight Club—Nevin Ferry, Georgia Riley and Carlos Gomez—along with faculty adviser Dr. Tamara Schwartz, Associate Professor of Cybersecurity & Strategy at York College’s Graham School of Business, about some of the challenges surrounding technology and young people. We’ll discuss cybersecurity, IT, screen time and the ways online communities can create unexpected risks.
The conversation will also explore a research paper by a recent York College graduate titled “Digital Playgrounds, Real-World Threats: Radicalization in Gaming Environments.” The research examines how gaming platforms can allow users to form relationships and build online communities, while also creating opportunities for vulnerable participants to be targeted for radicalization.
