Women speak out about alleged tax fraud scheme
A massive tax fraud case involving more than $80 million in refunds is forcing multiple people to come forward about their personal experience.
Two women who spoke with NBC15 News, but didn’t want to be identified, say they’re still in disbelief about being victims. We’ll identify them as Client A and Client B.
“I’m glad they got her because it’s not just me. It’s multiple people that she scammed,” Client B said.
There’s some relief after federal charges were revealed Wednesday in the multi-million-dollar tax fraud scheme.
“It was like a relief on the whole community because nobody has done anything. Nobody else stood for us,” Client A said.
The two women are now sharing their stories, and the financial nightmare they say they never saw coming.
“Now, I’m in debt,” Client B said. “I owe them $30,000 for something I didn’t agree to.”
Both women say they were referred to JB Accounting Tax Service, LLC., one in 2021 and the other in 2022. They claim they struggled to get answers about their tax returns, and didn’t realize what had been filed in their names until it was too late.
One woman says she couldn’t get copies of her tax documents. The other says she later discovered information on her return she never authorized.
“We kept asking, well, okay, where’s the tax papers? When are we going to get a copy? When can he sign these tax papers? What’s the actual amount?” Client A asked. “Because they’ve got our W2s, they’ve got our kid’s information, what are we going to get back? What type of tax credit and stuff like that? They never would elaborate or let that information out.”
“That was the only thing that was supposed to be on there was my W2s, but when I looked at it, she added more information that I wasn’t aware of or didn’t agree on,” Client B said.
According to an unsealed federal indictment, six people, including JB Accounting owner, Jennifer Beverly, are accused of filing more than 9,000 fraudulent tax returns. Prosecutors say those returns sought more than $177 million in refunds, with the IRS paying out about $81 million. The indictment alleges the returns included false claims for business expenses, COVD-related credits, fuel tax credits, estimated tax payments and education credits.
“It’s really sad because we have to suffer for what somebody else did on our tax return when we weren’t aware of it,” Client B said. “Like, it doesn’t make any sense.”
Now, with federal charges filed, they’re hoping the case brings accountability as they continue dealing with the financial fallout.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Jennifer Beverly is currently being held at the Federal Detention Center in Houston, Texas. Her federal inmate listing release date is listed as unknown.
All six defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
