Will Smith once considered starring in The Accountant before Ben Affleck played its number-crunching lead. Meanwhile, Christian Wolff later placed No. 30 on Polygon’s ranking of cinema’s greatest hitmen, judged by their job skills.
Back in April 2013, Deadlinereported that Smith was again eyeing the project after an earlier version stalled. Initially, Mel Gibson had been lined up to direct him, but that pairing never reached the screen.
Eventually, director Gavin O’Connor directed the 2016 thriller from Bill Dubuque’s screenplay, with Affleck playing Wolff. However, Smith did not appear in the finished film.
On screen, Wolff runs a small-town <a href="https://bitcomme.com/dougs-raises-eur-50-million-for-agentic-ai-accounting/” title=”Dougs raises EUR 50 million for agentic AI accounting”>accounting office while examining financial records for dangerous criminal organizations. Then, a client gives him a job that uncovers missing money and puts lives at risk.
Why Does Ben Affleck’s Accountant Rank Among Cinema’s Greatest Hitmen?
Beyond his skill with numbers, Wolff has combat training and can defend himself against killers. Consequently, Polygon included him in a list comparing fictional assassins’ discipline, abilities, and effectiveness, rather than ranking the films themselves.
Importantly, Wolff is autistic, but his fighting ability comes from training, not simply his diagnosis. Meanwhile, O’Connor said he and Affleck consulted educators, specialists, and autistic people while preparing the character.
Looking back, the director toldThe Irish Times: “So one of the things that was important to me and to Ben was to go into it as if we knew nothing.” He added: “Put aside preconceptions.”
Additionally, Anna Kendrick plays Dana Cummings, an accountant who identifies the discrepancy at the robotics company hiring Wolff. Elsewhere, J.K. Simmons plays Treasury official Ray King, whose investigation brings another strand of the story into focus.
Finally, The Accountant opened in theaters on October 14, 2016, and earned about $155 million worldwide. Although critics gave it mixed reviews, the film later gained viewers through streaming and inspired a sequel starring Affleck.
