Disconnected artificial intelligence tools are inadvertently creating more manual work for employees rather than driving true efficiency.
A recent global research report from Workday surveyed 6,100 professionals to uncover why AI in HR is currently stalling. The study, titled The Copy/Paste Economy: Why Task-Oriented AI is Failing the Enterprise, was conducted alongside The Harris Poll.
It found that task-oriented AI often forces workers to act as the manual glue between disconnected enterprise systems.
Workers are finding that despite new technological investments, their daily administrative burdens are actively increasing.

More than eight in 10 employees (82%) spend significant time copying and pasting information between systems.

The rise of the copy-paste economy
The research highlights a harsh reality for modern HR leaders and enterprise organisations.
Many businesses struggle when implementing standalone HR software solutions successfully without communicating with core business platforms.
Consequently, employees must spend hours manually translating data between unintegrated databases.
These disconnected bots may quickly summarise a lengthy document or draft a polite email. However, they cannot automatically update payroll, alter compliance records, or adjust complex hiring metrics.
Humans are left to carry the data from the AI tool back into the primary system of record. Human resources departments are particularly vulnerable to these specific technological inefficiencies.
Recruiters often use standalone AI to screen resumes or draft initial candidate outreach emails. Yet, without proper integration, they must manually enter candidate data into the company’s main tracking system. This manual duplication of effort entirely negates the initial time saved by the artificial intelligence tool.
The research points to a growing disconnect between executive expectations and everyday employee reality. Business leaders frequently deploy new AI tools expecting immediate productivity spikes across their departments.
Leaders who are managing modern workforce digital transformation initiatives often fail to account for data management requirements. Employees are left to bridge the technical gap, functioning as human application programming interfaces.
This issue, however, is not driven by a lack of employee engagement or a widespread fear of new technology. In fact, 97% of the surveyed professionals stated they actually like their jobs and feel connected to company goals.
The core problem lies strictly in how workplace technology integration is currently managed by enterprise decision-makers. When companies use AI as a simple add-on tool, it inherently generates administrative busywork.
One study participant, a director-level employee in the construction sector, highlighted this exact daily frustration.
“My day often feels busy but not genuinely productive when I’m pulled into constant coordination tasks and system-related issues that interrupt focused, high-value work,” the participant shared.
They noted that system-related issues frequently interrupt their actual, high-value strategic work.
Organisations that fail to integrate these tools risk worsening the exact employee burnout they intended to cure.
Why embedded AI drives efficiency
The data suggests a strong need for HR and IT leaders to rethink their technical infrastructure. The most significant workplace transformation occurs when AI is embedded directly into core systems.
Embedded AI solutions inherently understand internal compliance rules, complex data models, and specific approval chains. When AI is baked directly into the main workflow, the reported efficiency gains become dramatic.
In organisations using embedded AI, 60% of employees report time savings of 25% or more.
Adopting integrated solutions also helps resolve frustrating data discrepancies across the entire business.

Trust remains another critical factor in successful AI adoption across any modern workforce. According to the survey data, 87% of employees say their confidence in AI increases when they trust the underlying system.
Most workers already trust the established platforms they use to manage teams, view payslips, and request annual leave. Operating artificial intelligence securely within those familiar spaces allows adoption friction to largely disappear.
Many companies are now actively moving away from treating enterprise AI adoption strategies as peripheral, standalone experiments.
Instead, businesses are shifting corporate investments toward integrated platforms where AI and humans each manage clearly defined, automated steps.
