Artificial intelligence is often portrayed as an unstoppable force transforming the modern workplace. Governments are investing heavily in AI innovation, companies are integrating generative AI into everyday workflows, and technology leaders routinely describe AI as the future of productivity. Yet new survey data suggests many workers remain hesitant, skeptical, or simply uninterested in using AI on the job.
A recent report from Omni Calculator found that approximately one in four workers (26%) have secretly avoided or refused to use AI at work without informing their manager or team. Even more striking, nearly four in ten workers are not expected to use AI at all in their current roles. The findings reveal a growing disconnect between the public narrative surrounding AI adoption and the reality of how many employees actually engage with the technology.
For Canada, a country that has established itself as a global AI leader, the results raise important questions about workplace readiness, employee trust, and the future of human-machine collaboration.
The AI revolution that isn’t universal
The Omni Calculator survey of employed adults found that while AI access is widespread, mandatory use remains relatively uncommon. The most common workplace arrangement was one where AI tools are approved but optional, reported by 42% of respondents. Only 22% said they were expected to use employer-approved AI tools as part of their work. In practical terms, this means a significant proportion of workers are not being actively pushed toward AI adoption.
The survey also found that 56% of workers describe their workplace’s position as allowing AI use without encouraging it, while only 26% reported leadership actively promoting AI usage. Requirements or outright bans were comparatively rare. This suggests that many organizations are still experimenting with AI rather than embedding it fully into operational processes. Such findings challenge the perception that AI has already become a workplace necessity.
Perhaps the most intriguing finding is the existence of what could be described as “quiet AI resistance.” According to the survey, 45% of workers have deliberately completed a task manually instead of using an available AI tool. Furthermore, 26% admitted to secretly avoiding or refusing AI use without telling colleagues or management. Contrary to popular assumptions, fear of technology was not the primary reason.
The survey found that pride in one’s own work was the leading factor influencing workers to limit AI use, cited by 39% of respondents. Concerns over AI accuracy followed closely behind at 33%. These findings suggest many workers see AI not simply as a productivity tool but as something that potentially affects professional identity and personal expertise. For knowledge workers whose careers are built upon specialized judgment, writing, analysis, or creative problem-solving, delegating tasks to AI may feel uncomfortable even when technically permissible.
A question of trust
The issue appears closely linked to trust. Only 4% of respondents reported that they completely trust AI to handle important work tasks. By contrast, 39% said they trust AI only for smaller or less consequential activities.
Trust remains one of the central challenges facing AI deployment worldwide. Generative AI systems are capable of producing fluent and convincing responses, but inaccuracies, hallucinations, and contextual misunderstandings continue to occur. In regulated sectors such as healthcare, financial services, government, engineering, and pharmaceuticals, these limitations may have significant consequences. As a result, many professionals treat AI as an assistant rather than a decision-maker. In practice, this often means using AI to draft, summarize, or brainstorm while maintaining human oversight for final decisions.
The Canadian perspective

Recent discussions around AI regulation, privacy protection, intellectual property, and responsible use have also encouraged companies to proceed cautiously rather than rushing deployment. For employers, the challenge increasingly lies not in acquiring AI tools but in creating organizational trust around their use.
Another interpretation of the survey findings is that the absence of widespread AI expectations may be entirely reasonable. Not all occupations benefit equally from AI adoption. Some roles rely heavily on interpersonal communication, manual skills, physical presence, or highly specialized expertise that AI cannot easily replicate. In these situations, employers may see little value in requiring AI usage.
The survey’s finding that nearly four in ten workers are not expected to use AI could therefore reflect practical business realities rather than technological lag. Organisations appear to be distinguishing between tasks that genuinely benefit from automation and those that remain fundamentally human. This selective approach may ultimately prove more sustainable than blanket AI mandates.
The data also points toward a broader workplace debate. For years, success was measured largely through efficiency. AI promises to accelerate many routine tasks, making productivity gains highly attractive to employers. Yet workers seem to be placing value on something else: authenticity.
When nearly four in ten employees say they limit AI use because they take pride in their own work, the message is clear. Many professionals continue to find meaning in applying their own knowledge, creativity, and judgment rather than outsourcing those activities to algorithms. This does not necessarily indicate opposition to AI. Instead, it reflects a desire for balance. The future workplace may not be defined by humans versus AI, but by determining when human input remains essential and when automation genuinely adds value.
