A NASA-funded project at the University of Iowa is developing artificial intelligence to forecast nitrate levels in untreated drinking water, addressing rising concentrations in the state.
KCRG reports, developers began training the AI system last month with years of water records and satellite data. Once ready, the system will predict changes in nitrate levels, allowing water treatment teams to adjust quickly.
“They also help us gain some understanding about the environment and what the drivers are for these concentrations and how these concentrations have changed over time,” University of Iowa Associate Professor and Project Lead Jesus Gomez Velez said.
The project is expected to take three years to develop and will eventually be available online for treatment systems and the general public.
